That's not what's happening here. The BOS 1st would be the cap dump + Blackwood. The 7th overall would be for the 14th overall + Bords, Benning, & a 3rd.

I'm not crazy about this from a SJ perspective, but you're just ignoring the entire other massive portion of the trade

We need that high end prospect at #7 more than we need to dump Korpi.

Rutta is literally as good as Whitecloud, Granlund is infinitely better and a leader on the team

Very solid. I'd say his value is equivalent to an early 2nd. Projects to be at worst a 3rd line scoring forward, and at best a solid 45-60 pt 2nd liner LW/C. Another appeal for some teams is that he's NHL ready

Korpisalo is likely in Ottawa come season opener. They lack picks and prospects thanks to Dorion, so they can’t afford to give up another 1st (either one). Forsberg is likely gone but it shouldn’t take a 1st to move his deal.

They're both 3rd paring / 7th d-men. Only Rutta will be gone next year. We'd be stuck with Whitecloud for another 4 years.
