Description
I'm going to start off this by saying that I am a huge fan of Braden Holtby. He is one of the truly elite goaltenders in today's game. I know that this wouldn't have happened, but it was an idea that I had tonight while I was thinking about our organizational goaltending depth. Again, I'd hate to see Braden Holtby in a different uniform, and I'm not suggesting it either. It was simply an idea that I had.

This takes place before the draft, before the Coyotes acquire Anti Raanta from the Rangers. The thought process behind this was thinking about what our organizational needs are right now -- high end forward prospects and NHL-level depth (plus cap space). We get all those things with this trade. We can only do this because we have someone that can be a #1 goalie for us in Grubauer, and we have Ilya Samsonov coming soon, who projects to be an elite goalie in the NHL.

Caps fans, think about it this way: would you rather have the goaltending of Holtby for 55-60 starts and Grubauer for 20-25 starts, or Grubauer for 60 starts and Copley for 20, plus the production of MOJO and Clayton Keller, plus another high end prospect in the system?

I'm not sure this is something that the Coyotes would accept, but I feel the value is there. A young, elite goalie on a more than reasonable contract won't come cheap. I feel that the production we get from Keller not only now, but in the future he can really help replicate some of the production we'll lose from Ovechkin as he ages. Not to mention that we don't have to dump MOJO, so we'd get another 55 points from him.

Caps need to move Holtby next summer or the summer after. They can't let him go for nothing. They could get a TON for him.

Agreed. Holtby has never played for a bad NHL team. He just might be just "another goalie" on a poor team, Coyotes can spend 6.1 on. a goalie or other players quite easily without having to give up two first rounders.
The fact that Krakowitz thinks it OK for a top contender can go with 2.1m of goaltending shows 6.1m for one goalie might be excessive. In effect the Caps traded Johansen just to keep Holtby. Maybe Holtby is just worth a 2nd and 3rd rounder. Hardly any team can take on Holtby's contract without sending money back to the Capitals. That would limit his trade value, just not a market for that type of deal.

Does nobody realize that our defensive system is built around Holtby? Saying he'd be "just another goalie is completely ridiculous".

No, what is completely ridiculous is thinking Holtby and is top 3 GAA with Washington would be continue with a team like Arizona. Another one third of goal a game average higher in Arizona from 2.07 to 2.40 would put Holtby in the "average " are even worse. goalie in GAA, almost the definition of just average goalie.

I actually think this is possible. But remember, the Raanta trade is more of a Raanta + Stepan trade. So in this case, think more Holtby (step up from Raanta) + Johansson (similar to Stepan) for the same return, if not a bit more.

Don't know why people are going insane saying it's impossible when it clearly happened just a few weeks ago. Good thinking bud! Obviously though, in retrospect, it's easy to say what should have been done. Maybe nobody in the Washington organization thought of anything like this as possible.
