Gardiner, Bozak and JVR didn't drop the ball last season, Duchene and Barrie heavily let their team down. Barrie was a -34 with only 40 minutes played on the PK, and that's kind of atrocious. It's a downgrade for a higher price in my opinion, and Babcock loves Gardiners ability to control the play and puck possession.
Duchene only notched 43 points last season, and yes let's say we forget last season, still, he's only ever got more than 60 points twice in 8 years and has struggled with injuries a lot of that time, too, along with inconsistency. He could thrive under Babcock, but at the asking price Sakic has set (not this horribly out of control trade) it's really not worth it. The Leafs have Bozak, who can contribute and has a great mentor quality with the team, and great chemistry with the players already.
If we do grab Duchene and Barrie and they do both exceed expectations under Babcock, then they'll ask for a raise when their contracts are up in a couple years and the Leafs will be forced to let them walk for nothing or try to trade them depending on where the Leafs sit in the standings that year. It seems like a really pointless trade for both teams, because either we get players who are coming off a horrid season with expensive contracts that don't get better and flop still, or we get two players who rebound and become successful that we won't be able to afford and gave up futures to get them.
As for the trade, it's definitely not gonna work, since Sakic is over asking and you won't get those players from them for that price, even if it's a quality center, a top 4 D and a blue chip prospect with a few rag tag players in there.
