The flames literally got Markstrom for free.

Pick 1:
Option 1:
Teams give good goalies away for free
Option 2:
Markstrom isn't a good goalie

It's not the worst Markstrom trade proposal I have seen on here. Depends on what you think of Holtz

It is an absolutely massive overpay.

NJD doesn't accept even if you take out holtz

Devils are desperate for a goalie and there aren’t many options in free agency so unless they get ullmark they don’t really have a choice

I’m a flames fan lol. Markys old, expensive and with how the flames will be next year his trade value will go down. Flames should cash in high on him while they can before he goes back to first shot goal Marky

The proposal isn't bad in fact it's pretty good. I was responding to the guy who said "another day another horrible Markstrom to NJD trade".

At this point I'd rather get Holtz than Mercer. Mercer isn't looking like a top 6 center but Holtz is bigger, a few months younger, probably the better goal scorer and better on the wing. Holtz also has another year left on his entry level contract while Mercer is RFA now.

The value of NJ's 2024 1st has also gone up from what it was before the trade deadline when acquiring Markstrom was expected to improve them enough to just make the playoffs or just miss them meaning the pick would be around 16th/17th OA instead of 10th OA. That makes it worth Calgary adding Vancouver's late 1st.

Note: before NJ fans go crazy about Holtz' value now that I said I'd rather have him it isn't that Holtz' value has gone up it's that Mercer's value has gone down. Mercer's potential isn't what most thought it was a year or even just a few months ago.

There are plenty of other options besides massively overpaying for a goalie in his mid 30s.

While I agree with that premise in general, there are 2 issues here.
1. Goalies age different than skaters
2. Who else are you looking at bringing in? Ullmark? Not sure there is much of a list to look at after that

Yes. Ullmark.

You're right, goalies do age differently. The decline in the mid 30s is incredibly common. And the fall off in the mid 30s is usually abrupt, sudden, and large.

If it's Ullmark, then absolutely. He is a way better option!

As for the article, it was a great read. Thank you for the information. It is a little misleading as some of the commenter's point out. But the premise that most goalies decline over 35 is true; except for your elite ones, and that isn't Markstrom

The NHL is becoming a younger and younger game every year. Likely even steeper of a fall off for more recent data

Don't know why Devils fans pine for Ullmark... that guy's not winning a Cup unless the Colorado Avalanche are in front of him

I would love to see an updated article; that was from 2014 I believe. Someone like Fleury might skew the older goalie trend like Brodeur & Hasek did in this one. But looking at Kuemper, Mike Smith, Holtby, etc... that cliff they talk about is real!

Because their shooter-tutor in practice had a higher save percentage than any of their goalies this year. And Ullmark is a waaaaaaay better option than what they have had between the pipes the last two years

Great, NJ can become like Toronto... crush regular seasons with 115 points, and get stomped in the first round cuz their goalie has the psychological fortitude of a 13 year old girl

And they'll make new excuses every year as to why they lose over and over and over again

May as well stock up on paper bags if they give away a bunch of assets for whom they treat like Marty Brodeur, but who is more like Patrick Lalime

Who do you think would be a difference maker in goal that they could reasonably be able to acquire?
