80% of players who go through Arb hearings are gone in two years. Most fans of those teams say the same thing, “our guy is different”…”our GM will never let him go”…yet it happens all the time. Also, at goalie position specifically, RFAs are more likely moved than signed guys. They were over $2m apart on a one-year deal last time. That’s not very close. And haven’t gotten very far on long-term deal. So a little early to make any sort of guarantees.
They have cap room in place and the kid is a local folk hero in Boston after this playoff run.
How many players after arbitration are offered 8 year contracts that give them generational wealth.
The Bruins were in an utter difficult spot last year with cap room. They are not this year. They also chose NOT to do a 2 year arbitration number to preserve the relationship and upside.
If things were dire, why did Sweeney refuse to even discuss it?
Can’t wait for this to be signed now that he has proven himself in the playoffs (which was the one open item).
Then we can discuss what we’d need to add to Ullmark to get Mercer?
