I think it's just so hard to ballpark Laine's trade value right now. He's missed a large majority of this season and has been so up and down his whole career, but I swear he has the potential to pot 50 in a year in the right scenario. Maybe he meshes with McMichael or Lapierre and just lights it up. I can't see this offer being beaten out by anyone else. I think the 2024 1st and a low level prospect should be more than enough given his injury history and where Columbus is right now in their rebuild.
Laine was always an awkward fit with CBJ - they only traded for him because Jarmo caved into
Dubois' shenanigans and made a panicked trade. Fluky injuries and shortened seasons have really hurt him, and his timeline doesn't line up with CBJ, particularly considering he doesn't have the term JG does.
He's still been roughly a .80 PPG guy with CBJ, which is saying something considering the mess CBJ have been since they got him, and the expectations they put on him to be That Guy, which he isn't (and that's OK!). Put him in the right system, and I totally agree he can be a legit first-line weapon again.
And yeah, I'm still in shock over how universally liked this trade is. That just...doesn't happen on CapFriendly. Or even the internet.
