100% agree that GM’s not only think about cap hit. But, they’re also not going to throw in any significant assets to ditch a contract that costs them a barely league minimum contract if they were to buy it out

Not at that low of money. Bill Guerin kept his job after buying out Parise and Suter both with $5M buy outs over 8 years and a much worse cap hit situation.

It’d actually be more likely for a GM to lose his job if he overspent to move Kotkaniemi instead of buying out the contract. Yes $10M over 12 years seems like a lot, but it saves the organization over $20M so it’s really not that bad. You either pay him $10M over 12 years to not play for you when his play is hurting you and suffer a $800K buyout cap hit, or you pay him over $30M to play and hurt the team for 6 years and weaken your ability to win a cup…. A buyout is the right play and wouldn’t cost the GM their job

Canes aren't adding that kind of draft capital to make a trade happen. Hawks should totally gamble on taking KK for free. If it really stays horrendous the buyout is very small.
