Description
Some tomfoolery included in the conditions, but the strategy is essentially to provide flexibility for the hawks and protection for the teams sending firsts. Ideally we would have 2 1sts in 24, 3 firsts in 25, and 2 firsts in 2026.

LOL. You want retention plus a 1st round pick for Goodrow. Rangers say pound sand with your absurd offer.

Referencing this trade.

Retention doesn’t make or break the trade, but in my opinion a first is absolutely a fair ask to eat 3 years of that contract.

That’s fun and all but they will buy him out before paying that cost. Either a team wants him and he’s willing to go or it’s a buyout.. not a dump

Your opinion, which means nada to the Rangers. His contract is an easy buy out if Drury wants cap space so there is ZERO chance they give up a 1st round pick to trade him. ZERO.

You underestimate the value of flexibility, 6 year buyout at this structure is somewhat limiting especially in the year his cap hit is ~3.5.

Also, I hate to break it to you, but neither your opinion nor mine makes a difference to any executive at the NHL level. Judging by your aggressive style of replying I think you are missing the point of posting on this forum, or at least deriving some sort of pleasure from attempting to put others down. In any case, you are now added to the ignore list not because you shared an opinion on the post, but because you seem like a generally unpleasant person.

The buyout in year three is pretty rough no? As a general rule I’m not estatic about taking a cap dump over two years, so if that truly is how the rangers will approach that problem I wish them the best of luck.

We retain 1.2 and get a mid pick because Goody @ 2.4m would get every GM's attention

The highest cap hit of the buy-out happens when Panarin and Trouba come off the books

It’s a very buy-out friendly contract and a no brainer move

In year 3 we no longer have Bread or Trouba on contract so that’s 20M plus the cap will steadily be going up 4m+ so I’m not really concerned with a year of 3M dead cap

The Rangers could easily trade him with 50% retention knocking his cap hit down to $1,820,834 and even give a 3rd team a 4th or 5th round pick to withhold half more making his cap hit $910,417. Plenty of teams would take that and run.

Or, they could buy him out and here are the numbers:

Year 1 - They gain $247,222 in cap room
Year 2 - Cap hit is $1,002,778 or 1.1% of the cap which will probably be $91.5 million +/- by then
Year 3 - Cap hit is $3,502,778 or 3.8% of cap if it doesn't go up
Years 4 - 6 Cap hit is $1,111,111 or 1.1% of cap if it doesn't go up

The Rangers have no other dead money so a Goodrow buy out would have minimal impact on their cap situation and flexibility and would not be limiting at all.

Either option is way better than your proposal of giving up a 1st round pick to trade him.

You know what, sure

The pick is not only next year, but can go as far down as 2027. a 3rd round pick will most likely not even make the show. Lee does have value but the islanders would need to either retain or take back at least 2 million for him not to be a cap dump imo

And with a core of Romanov, Horvat, Sorokin, Barzal, and Dobson even if the pick goes to 2027 I put good money they can be a playoff team by that point

The goodrow buyout makes a lot more sense than that NYR trade
