Another mediocre offseason

Description
1.) Trade idea credit goes to poster of Vancouver ACGM from today
2.) Trade idea credit goes to poster of Isles ACGM from this morning or yesterday

Assumptions
Sharks will have a quiet offseason, and couture will potentially retire.
Sharks will lose the lottery because we aren’t allowed to win one. I think this team still finishes dead last and have several reservations about playing this many prospects / young players. Kostin, Bords, Guschin, Zadina, and Thrun all seem like the type of prospects to thrive given the right amount of responsibility but to play them all together seems like too much responsibility for each.

EDM isn't interested in such a trade.

Why?

I figured they would want to try and clear as much cap as possible and a 3rd is a good price to do that and get a positive value contract that can play 2nd pair if needed but would be a good 3rd pair d guy (assuming his injury doesnt completely drail his career. 3rd also meaningless for EDM from a draft standpoint so might as well spend it, if yall have a better use for it then its a different story.

For a couple reasons.

1.) I don't perceive Ceci's contract as being one that would cost to move. Lyubushkin is a worse player that played fewer minutes on a much worse team and yet was traded for a 5th in return last offseason with 1 year left at 2.75mil. While each team's situation differs, it shouldn't vary so much to make it cost to move on from Ceci.
2.) I don't view Benning as a fit for what I want in a 3RD and, having seen him do it here in EDM, I don't even view him as a viable 2RD fill-in. He mimics the same stylistic weaknesses that Ceci has (average size, meh skating, no standout skill) and nothing about his play since leaving EDM suggest to me he's changed or elevated his game.

Ceci is not a cap dump first of all
Ceci is also a better player than benning. so no EDM will not move the better dman and add pick.
THe better use for the 3rd is the trade deadline when you want a team to retain so you can add as much as possible then.

Oh the third was for Bennings contract + the salary cap, i think Ceci is even value, but we just disagree about Benning as a player it seems

Ceci is significantly better than Benning, Edmonton doesn't touch this offer.

Don't forget Benning played in Edmonton for years, we know exactly what he brings.

I dont think Ceci is better than Benning, they are extremely comparable which makes bennings contract more of a deal and why pay the third Ceci isnt a cap dump but he’s not exactly a steal either.

He definitely has. When the sharks could provide a more correct role for him he was good. This year he was our 2d :/

BS. He's 3rd pairing by both TOI and QoC this year, on the worst team in the league. He's not even as good as he was when he played in Edmonton.

not sure how you see them as extremely comparable. in pretty much every advanced stat Ceci is well ahead over the last 3 years. Also in those years Ceci has played more time vs Elite comp while benning has a huge lead on him on time vs 3-4liners.. Ceci is the better player.

The athletic has given Benning a better defensive rating and Ceci has the better offensive rating, and the worse contract. Of course Ceci also gets to play with NHL caliber forwards I didn’t realize third pair ice time was 19:46 and 18:30 averages, where Ceci is playing less than a minute a night more. Given the context of their teams I am arguing that the results each has on their respective teams would be flip flopped ie, Benning would preform like Ceci does if he was on the oilers and vise versa. And so Benning is on a more valuable contract and you get him for the extra year at that price as the cap rises.

You have had 3 Oilers fans tell you we don't want Bening and are not trading Ceci for him. What more do you need - a personal phone call from Ken Holland?

The Oilers moved on from Benning several years ago, they aren't going to overpay for him now.

At 5v5 Benning has played an average of 14:58 minutes per game this year - 9th among all Sharks defensemen. That tells me what his coach thinks about him right there.

One of our most important penalty killers but convenient to take those minutes out of his total, also your figure includes players with small sample sizes and largely ignores the context of our team, injuries when Benning was still playing, and what team other defenders were on before they joined our team. Stats are supposed to be a supporting tool not a main argument. It is okey to disagree about player status and hypothetical trades. But i for one hope the oilers keep as many deals like Ceci around so they dont win a cup while Evander Kane is on the team.

most people use only 5V5 to compare players as that is the most even playing field... players are neither at an advantage or disadvantage to skew their stats...
alright lets just use stats as a supporting tool. the eye test will show you Ceci is better that is why two teams currently moved on from him and he is on a bottom 2 team. on any playoff team he would be a 7-8 depth dman that is it. the advanced stats support this as well.

Yeah man a player playing with granlund as his top center vs McDavid is at no disadvantage

benning played 4 years with mcdavid and they still moved on from him.
If you look this year ekholm and bouchard play with mcdavid more, ceci very little.

Also if your only legit argument is he plays with better players it not strong. good player draw in good players. wierd how benning was sent out then....
Also the report here is they had a trade to move ceci for a slight upgrade and mcdavid and the team nixed it said they wanted to keep ceci.
