Description
Not sure if there would be appetite for this from either side, but the thought popped into my head for some reason. Colton has a NTC that kicks in next year, so theoretically the trade could happen before it goes into effect. The Avs have been quite happy with Colton, but it could be where they save some much needed money.

Anyway, Colorado bets on a young player with a high ceiling and saves a bit of cap by doing so. Ritchie replaces Colton as 3C. Meanwhile, NY gets a sure thing for four more years but also adds some cap in the short term. This adds protection for the Chytil injury as well.

I don't know who (if anyone) adds here. I'm tempted to say NY since Kakko is having a very rough season, but I also recognize that high potential has value. Thus, I ended up leaving it as a straight up trade and would like to hear some opinions from both sides.

It was an 8 year contract after a 1 year 6.3 million contract.

He's their 4C and plays 11 mins a game.

45 million and 2 picks for a 4c

Right… today that’s where he fits best. If your expectations are absolute superstar immediately for all top10 picks then I see where you’re coming from. I once had those thoughts too. Today I see more eye to eye with actual GMs and look at their timelines and get their patience or impatience. How many late 1sts become legit middle 6 nhl players with 10+ year careers?? If you’re trying to win a cup today would you rather a 1st or a legit nhl quality player that can move up and down your lineup? If you’re CHI it’s obvious the pick, if it’s BUF it’s still the pick but soon those priorities will change

Doesn’t change that he’s still young, on a cheap contract with term, a C. That 1st wouldn’t be on the team for a few more years and that 3rd wouldn’t make it. Meanwhile they are trying to win a cup.. oh and there’s always the obvious revenge on MTL.

I believe that Colton has played well into his 4 million a year cap hit, I think that he fits a role on the third line that is valuable, he can even be a top power play guy if he needs to fill in as he's proved this season. His cap hit isn't solely depended on how many points he puts up per season, a lot more goes into it then points

It's not a cheap contract. He stinks.

Ya you’re probably right. Kakko and KK are both busts and stink and will never amount anything o more. NYR and CAR should try to be more like BUF. You can tell by the standings that the GMs are doing it wrong 💀

2 things can be right.

The kotkaniemi offersheet and 8 year contract were big mistakes, and the Sabres are not good.

I know that's hard to believe, but it's possible.

So CAR could have Filip bystedt who doesn’t look to be promising in anyway/anytime soon, or a legit NHL roster player. Today you can argue he is overpaid and under used. 6 years from now it won’t be the case. Teams have to do this all the time. Both marner and nylander were overpaid in their 1st year of their contracts but by the end they were either worth the deal or it was a steal. Maybe myself and CAR are completely wrong… maybe.. but given the position they have maintained in the league I doubt it.

They could have bystedt and another player! They could have signed a guy like Evan Rodriguez, or jt compher or anyone else!

They could have done anything else

Yes, they could have 2 prospects with low potential. As for the Erod hindsight you could say that about all teams. Had PIT signed him to an 8 year deal at the time they would be laughing today. So for comparison

After last year Erod has played 385 game and had 168 points at the age of 30….30!

As of now KK he played 385 games and has 158 points at the age of 23… 7 years younger and still developing in a defensive style system teaching him to be a better 2 way player.

So ya, today I would pick Erod for a single game or season but if you set on recency bias or are short sighted you will certainly pick him 10/10 times. However a GM that wants a future player and a player for today as well, well then your taking KK even if he isn’t earning his contract at Themis moment. And certainly over the 2 picks that don’t have much potential.

Just utterly preposterous.

They gave up draft capital and salary cap for 9 years. They could literally do anything with that cap space or with those draft picks.

Instead they have a black hole at 4C.

Sure. Not my team so I don’t really care and you’re close minded so I know you can’t see anything other than stats and cap space. As you guys have always said; Laf and Kakko are busts and so is KK. None are better that a replacement player and never will be. 👌🏼
