Those UFA signings LMAO

Anyways.... Pens won't retain on smith. Team is either taking 100% or they move him in the summer.

And then we retain for next year and get less of a return. I'd take a 2nd now.

Disagree completely. If Smith were a rental then sure, but he isn't. With Petry and then Smith being retained on, Dubas won't have enough retention slots for next deadline.

I don't think they want to carry that cap hit over till next year.
If they move him buyer is probably dishing that to a 3rd party.

We would have one more spot. Now if you are saying they need extra cap space for UFAs this summer then ok but the UFA market is not great and why should we be spending on 28-32 year olds again?

Not worried about the cap space. Strictly worried on removing the flexibility of retaining on future moves. I would want a much stronger return than a single 2nd to justify the move. He can almost definitely get a 3rd without any retention.

Nah, i'd rather have the cap space.

They could move smith in the summer if they can't at the TDL. If they retain $2M on him then the raise in cap is effectively null and void. (JJ buyout, Petry Retention and Smith retention).

But what are we doing with an extra 2 million? Signing a 4th liner? It seems like a 2nd round pick for the future of this team is more important than 2 mil.

a 2nd round pick does nothing for this team over the next 3-4years (unless they'd use that pick in a trade in the summer).

So yes i'd rather have the cap space, cap space is an asset.

But to do what? It’s 2 million and it’s a weak UFA class.

I'd rather spend it to sign guys to 1yr deals, see what happens in the season and sell them at the deadline for assets.
