But no retention?

If it costs so much to dump Vanecek, we’d just keep him. Otherwise, it’s hard to see how the return has increased?

Holtz and Markstrom we know about. You're assuming the other pieces. You can't know that.

I’d be fine with everything but adding depth. We’re re tooling not gearing up for a playoff run so kinda seems unnecessary.

Just wait till NJ fans see their lord and saviour Alexander Holtz is in the Marky deal. Automatic no from them.

Bahl doesn’t need to be in there imo. Neither does Vancek, just defeats the purpose of the trade by still taking up Wolfs NHL spot. Just retain 1-2 mill on Marky instead.

The article said NJD was willing to do a trade without retention, not that they were willing to give what they were willing to pay for retained markstrom for unretained markstrom.

Before: NJD unwilling to take on markstrom unless he came with retention
Now: NJD willing to take on markstrom even unretained.

Holtz for Markstrom with retention is the reported deal that almost went through.

Pierre LeBrun put out a story yesterday that Devils GM had recently indicated to Calgary that he would do a trade without retention. (Unclear if this came before or after Markstrom’s comments yesterday).

While retention appeared to be the hang up early on, when this story first came out, a number of people have said since it was not the retention but the cost of the retention.

Later, it came out the the deal they agreed on included $2m of retention (as recently as Friedman saying last night on NHL network around 7pm Eastern).

I suspect the hang-up was more about Fitzy’s bid for Hanifin as well…until Hanifin moves, he wants combined package. (My speculation)

Devils fans do not want to see Holtz in this deal, but have accepted it since it’s been reported in a number of spots.
