In my mind, both trades make sense.

Devil's are going to try to make the playoffs and flames will want more for Tanev especially if they need to eat Cole's contract.

You act as if taking on Cole is a bad thing, it makes perfect sense for the Flames, they get a future for Tanev which helps their rebuild while also getting a quality dman back who they can either flip for another future or keep to help their playoff push. Also, while I agree that NJD will push for the playoffs, if Jack Hughes goes down again or they go on a skid I can see them selling Toffoli, better than losing him for nothing.

NJD is working on extending Toffoli and the Flames will take Cole but Raty or a Decent Prospect would need to be added and we’d prefer Soucy over Cole

Now what to you plan to pay for the Retention, the dump of Tyler Myers, or John Marino?

Flames are asking for a 1st or 2nd plus prospect to take Tanev. Cole could be flipped for another asset but would still need to compensate flames for taking the cap back.

Its not bad, but the Canucks appear to get a whole bunch softer and much more fragile with these trades, just ahead of the playoffs?
