I doubt it in a much lower tax market like Carolina. But the issue isn't money, it's that EP40 apparently doesn't want to sign long term. If he's looking for his quickest way to free agency, a 9.75 mill deal in Carolina will still see him take more home after tax than an $11 million deal in Canada

Pettersson doesn’t sign that cheap and you aren’t getting him without including one of Nikishin/Svech/Jarvis on top of Necas. He gets more than Eichel because he’s a better player and doesn’t need major neck surgery

You're not getting two of Nikishin/Jarvis/Svech. While Eichel needed surgery, he was also cost certain and under term. EP40 is a pending RFA and doesn't have that. The extra prospect in Morrow and the pick more than make up for the difference in value. If you're expecting 2 top six players, a blue chip prospect, and multiple picks, you're going to be so sorely mistaken.

He might not sign that cheaply in Vancouver, but Carolina's got a much lower tax rate. He'll take home more off 9.75 in Raleigh than he would off an $11 million deal in Vancouver

You said you included Morrow to make up the difference between Krebs and FUS. Pettersson easily gets more than Eichel got. This isn’t that. And I never said I expected 2 top 6 forwards, a top prospect, and picks. But it’ll definitely be more than your offer.

Other way, I included FUS to make up the difference between Morrow and Krebs. EP40 is not going to get more than Eichel did, Vancouver (assuming EP40 refuses to extend) won't have the leverage. And this is that. And you're expecting all of that when you said two of Necas/Jarvis/Svechnikov or Nikishin. The truth is, you're likely getting one, a very good prospect, a 1st and a few picks.

Pettersson absolutely gets more than Eichel. Eichel’s career high at the time of the trade was 82 points, Pettersson is on pace to have his second consecutive 100 point season. Pettersson is a better defensive forward than Eichel. Pettersson doesn’t need significant neck surgery. There’s no world where he doesn’t get more than Eichel

Calgary didn’t have leverage when Tkachuk wanted out yet they still got a 115 point winger, a top pair dman, a 1st round pick, and a prospect. Pettersson is arguably more valuable than Tkachuk was seeing as he plays the more premium position, and multiple 95-100 point seasons

Eichel also had cost control and played on the dumpster fire Buffalo Sabres. Vancouver have been offensive dynamos forever. EP needs a new contract, doesn't have any certainty, and is arbitration eligible. There is no world where you can say he gets more than a Jack Eichel whose signed long term.

Calgary got two pending UFA's, one was worth it, a 1st and a meh prospect. EP40 is not more valuable than Tkachuk, stop smoking. They are not comparable. The comparable for EP40 is Eichel.

Pettersson: 1 100 point season, on pace for a second, great defensively, plays center which is the more valuable position, 397 points in 385 games, 18 points in 17 playoff games

Tkachuk prior to trade: 1 100 point season, solid defensively, plays winger which is the less valuable position, 382 points in 421 games, 15 points in 27 playoff games

So what makes Tkachuk more valuable than Pettersson?

EP40: very strong offensively, extremely weak defensively. Plays a more valuable position, good scoring rate.

Matty Tkachuk: Very strong offensively, Very strong defensively, less valuable position, but also outproduced EP40 last year has 2 100 point seasons, and multiple 40 goal seasons, a plateau EP40 has never reached.

All in all, Tkachuk's EASILY the more valuable player. the only knock is that he isn't a center

We’re talking about Tkachuk’s value when he was traded. Not his current value

And calling Pettersson weak defensively shows you don’t watch him play. He hasn’t been as good defensively this season but overall is still great defensively and a potential future Selke winner. “Never reached 40 goals” technically he hasn’t, but he had 39 last season. Not like he’s been far off. Also has a better career goals per game than Tkachuk

Pettersson has more goals and more assists in less games than Tkachuk had in Calgary. He plays the more valuable position. He’s great defensively. He’s absolutely at least just as valuable as Tkachuk was, if not more.

EP40 is weak defensively. Drop the bias.

He's got a better G/PG rate than Tkachuk, but Tkachuk also was on the 40-40-40 line with Gaudreau and Lindholm that all hit 40 goals, he's much more physical and more of a pest, he's better in a leadership role.

Yes, Tkachuk bloomed late in Calgary, but Tkachuk is the better offensive player, defensive player, and almost anything else you want to compare between the two. They're not comparables, stop being biased. I love EP40, but Tkachuk clears COMFORTABLY

EP40 hasn’t been the greatest defensively this season, but prior to this year he’s been great defensively. Especially last season

And while there’s more to being physical than just hits, Pettersson is on pace for 126 hits this year which is more than Tkachuk has had all but one season of his career (although he’s also on pace for more this year)

Pettersson is better offensively than Calgary Tkachuk, just as good if not better defensively than Calgary Tkachuk, and plays the more valuable position. Tkachuk also struggled in the playoffs before going to Florida, Pettersson was great in his one playoff run

If you wanna say current day Tkachuk is more valuable than Pettersson then yeah that’s totally fair. But Pettersson is absolutely just as valuable if not more valuable than Tkachuk was when he was traded. That’s not debatable

EP40 is nowhere near as good in either end as Tkachuk was, even in Calgary. Base production doesn't do it justice. Even if we ignore Tkachuk having the best season by a player in the analytical era of hockey last year, his underlying defensively are still better. Whether that's a Darryl Sutter system or not is different, but EP40 is not as valuable as Tkachuk was at the time of the trade. Someone that young got 2 pending UFA's, one coming off a career year and was bought high on, and has never shown signs of being able to sustain that. You're severely overrating EP40. He's got, but he's not in the same boat as Tkachuk, he's much closer to Eichel.

Brother when Tkachuk was traded that was like his first season over 77 points and he is a winger.. Pettersson is about to have his second 100 point season and he is a C.. He was 7th in Selke voting last season..

I just don't see how Eichel trade is being used as the comparable when Eichel was a worse player when he was traded than Pettersson and Pettersson was injured needing back surgery..

Wait, your argument for Petey being terrible defensively and Tkachuk being elite is a .02 xGA/60 difference? That's ridiculous

from everything I have read on this topic the last 24 hours I have two takeaways. 1. teams are going to give up more then they think if hes traded. 2. Van isnt going to get NEARLY as much for him as the Canucks fans think they are. Wayne Gretzky was traded for less than Van fans are asking for.

So Pettersson having a much higher G/60 doesn't matter but him having a much higher GA/60 matters? Yeah that makes so much sense
