How can this team possibly be this bad

1. Injuries: with Jack and Nico in the lineup our record is fantastic, and additionally Hamilton, Siegenthaler, Meier, Mcleod, Miller, Nosek, Haula etc also all missing meaningful time.
2. Goaltending: been much better the last few months but was utterly horrific to start the year. Still not particularly good
3. Coaching: Lindy Ruff sucks ass
4. Inexperience: Luke Bahl Hatakka Nemec had a combined 77 games of NHL experience coming into this year. They have played 154 games for us this year, with both Luke and Nemec playing 20+ minutes a night as rookies. Bahl especially has struggled.
5. Regression from Marino and Siegenthaler. While still effective dman, they aren't at the level they were last year, and when you combine that with Graves Hamilton and Severson being replaced by rookies that makes a big impact
6. Lack of depth play to make up for the large amounts of injuries. AHL caliber guys like Tierney Willman etc have been horrific trying to fill in and get caved in and cannot be played for more than 5 minutes a night. Bastian has also proven incredibly ineffective this year. Same with Brendan Smith, who was arguably the worst dman in the league for the first 20 or so games before Miller got healthy
7. Scheduling: not particularly meaningful but we have more back to backs than any other team and have a horrific record in them

I didn't mention the refs.

Are you denying that NJD hasn't been severly injured this year?

Meier, Hughes, Hischier, hamilton (4/5 of our highest players) have missed significant time to injury
Siegenthaler, Miller, Nosek, Smith, Palat, Mcleod have all missed significant time.

NJD has bad coaching. Are you denying that?

How is saying "Marino and Siegenthaler have been worse this year than they were last year" an excuse in any way? It's simply a matter of fact.

As I put pretty simply, the biggest difference is on the back end.

When you lose your number 1 dman for the year, 40 minutes a game leave in free agency, your 2 shutdown guys play worse, and your other veterans (Smith/Miller and Siegenthaler) both miss significant time to injury it causes the D to take a significant step back.

I’m not denying any of this, I’m saying every team deals with this. Some more severe than others lol

I’m not saying you mentioned refs, I was rattling off the common excuses you’ll hear hockey fans say which bad refs being one of them

The only thing that NJD had worse than anyone in the league is probably injuries. Back to backs, regression, bad goalies, and bad coaching all seen all around the league

Back to backs NJD objectively has more than anyone else. That is a fact

You agreed on injuries so thank you.

The goaltending has been overall horrendous. That is true no way around it. The good news for NJD going forward is goaltending is the cheapest position to acquire historically, and the most volatile in that a bad goalie can suddenly turn into a good goalie overnight (See UPL, Skinner this year).

Coaching is subjective but I don't think anyone thinks ruff is particularly good. The coaching staff is very clearly hurt by the loss of Bruno. This one isn't good going forward because we let our natural successor leave in the offseason and waited for like 10 coaches to take jobs first significantly limiting the market of top available guys.

Inexperience: this one is hard to deny, again a bunch of rookies and among the youngest teams in hockey. Good news is we get more experience every game and year that goes on.

Regression: this one is concerning. If Marino and Siegs don't find their groove again it will be tough to replace/upgrade there, however even in a 4-5 role they should be okay with a healthy and more experienced set of Hughes-Hamilton-Nemec above. I forgot to mention the regression from Mercer. If he doesn't get it together but I have faith.

I included it with injuries but the loss of Mcleod lately has been significantly impactful, and this one isn't gonna come back with time like the other injured players. Very hard skillset (and expensive) to replace and there isn't much in the pipeline. Finding a way to replace McLeods production would be priority 2 on my list behind a LD

Pens aren't interested in that.

Jarry is 3rd in WAR
Petterson is a 1st line defenseman

Vivek is 83rd in WAR and has a ton of negative value
The 1st is low
Holtz has value but the Pens have enough RW unless they trade Rust or Rakell.

1st+Vitek for Jarry is fair value (Goalies don't generally return much in trades)
Holtz+2nd for 50% Pettersson is reasonable value, but I would HAPPILY replace Holtz with a 1st+2nd instead

Goalies don't get traded for much but they are very important to a team with aspirations of winning (look at the problems in NJ). The Pens can't afford to trade a goalie who is top 5 in most 5v5 stats for futures. That said, Jarry is worth more than a 1st and a negative value goalie. A 1st, a decent prospect, and a neutral value goalie would be fair, IF the Pens were going full rebuild, which they are not.

Pettersson is similar in that the Pens would have to be punting on this and next season, which I think is unlikely unless there is a massive overpay. A 1st and Holtz would be fair but not an overpay.

Also, take into account that NJ and Pit are division rivals. That ups the cost on top of everything else.
