Description
The Athletic had a mock trade for Markstrom

Link: https://theathletic.com/5278873/2024/02/20/nhl-trade-deadline-moves-proposals-offers/

The perfect fit: Jacob Markström
The trade: Markström (25 percent retained) for Alexander Holtz, 2025 second-round pick

"LeBrun wrote recently that the two teams had disagreed over salary retention and its associated costs for a potential Markström deal, but for a Devils team that has some big tickets already on the books, plus other young players they’ll need to pay in the coming years, it’s an obstacle worth navigating — even if it means paying a significant price. And make no mistake, this price, which features Holtz and a second-rounder would be significant. But with the right amount of retention (we settled on 25 percent, taking Markström’s cap hit down to $4.5 million) that price is worth paying. There aren’t many natural comparable trades for top-level goalies with term moving at the deadline, but a useful frame of reference is the Colorado Avalanche trading a first-round pick and defense prospect Conor Timmins to the Arizona Coyotes for Darcy Kuemper at $1 million retained in the summer of 2021 (Arizona also received a conditional third-round pick since Colorado won the Stanley Cup). Holtz has emerged as a middle-six scorer, and was a top-10 pick in 2020 — he’d be akin to a first-rounder in this proposal. He can also help an NHL lineup right away, which should be a bonus to the retooling Flames. The second-round pick would be roughly equivalent to Timmins’ value at the time as a prospect. Markström has more term left than Kuemper did which would be attractive for the Devils, but given that he’s 34, it also comes with downside risk. That’s why we didn’t add to the proposal beyond what we already have. It’s a lot of moving parts, to be sure. But the ingredients are there for New Jersey to pull off a deadline blockbuster for the second straight year."

We keep seeing a lot of Markstrom to NJD trades and we'd love to have him. But the rumored price was Holtz for Markstrom...and unknown amount of retention. So if going off that, use Holtz plus 2nd or 3rd...(not Holtz, plus Mercer, Casey, and multiple picks)

I think I am over the Markstrom thing and don't want to give up on Holtz (as much as Lindy does!). Make soen depth adds and address G again in the summer imo.

What's the point of retention on both sides.

      Good question.

      1. Retaining both --

      Calgary retains $2.3m x 3 = $6.9m
      NJ retains $1.7m x 2 = $3.4m
      Net is Calgary retaining $3.5m

      2023-24:
      NJD pays $5.4m (Markstrom $3.7m, Vanecek $1.7m)
      CGY pays $4.0m (Vanecek $1.7m, Markstrom $2.3m)

      2024-25:
      NJD pays $5.4m (Markstrom $3.7m, Vanecek $1.7m)
      CGY pays $4.0m (Vanecek $1.7m, Markstrom $2.3m)

      2025-26:
      NJD pays $3.7m (Markstrom $3.7m, Vanecek $0)
      CGY pays $2.3m (Vanecek $0, Markstrom $2.3m)

      2. Retaining just Markstrom --

      Calgary retains $1.5m x 3 = $4.5m
      NJ retains $0 x 2 = $0
      Net is Calgary retaining $4.5m

      2023-24:
      NJD pays $4.5m (Markstrom $4.5m, Vanecek $0)
      CGY pays $4.9m (Vanecek $3.4m, Markstrom $1.5m)

      2024-25:
      NJD pays $4.5m (Markstrom $4.5m, Vanecek $0)
      CGY pays $4.9m (Vanecek $3.4m, Markstrom $1.5m)

      2025-26:
      NJD pays $4.5m (Markstrom $4.5m, Vanecek $0)
      CGY pays $1.5m (Vanecek $0, Markstrom $1.5m)

Difference for NJD by retaining both
      2023-24: +0.9m
      2024-25: +0.9m
      2025-26: -0.8m

We would be deferring a larger portion of the retained amount to later in Markstrom's term, where the risk is the highest.
And it is when Luke Hughes' new contract will come onto the books.
Its basically makes it so we pay a $1m more each of the two years to save $1m in third year.

And if Calgary decides to buy out Vanecek in off-season

      With just Calgary retaining
      2024-25: $1,466,667
      2025-26: $966,667

      With both sides retaining
      2024-25: $733,333
      2025-26: $483,333

      ....it would then look like:

      2023-24:
      NJD pays $5.40m (Markstrom $3.70m, Vanecek $1.70m)
      CGY pays $4.00m (Vanecek $1.70m, Markstrom $2.30m)

      2024-25:
      NJD pays $4.43m (Markstrom $3.70m, Vanecek $0.73m)
      CGY pays $3.03m (Vanecek $0.73m, Markstrom $2.30m)

      2025-26:
      NJD pays $4.18m (Markstrom $3.7m, Vanecek $0.48m)
      CGY pays $2.78m (Vanecek $0.48m, Markstrom $2.3m)

I could go either way. I am definitely not it the "just get a goalie and all will be solved" crowd...but I also think adding a veteran netminder might be boost of confidence. Even if we just reach playoffs and get bounced in first round, its a good experience for the guys that really matter long-term.

And if Fitzy wants to extend Toffoli...and give Hameenaho, Clarke, eventually Gritsyuk roles on this team, then winger becomes the expendable position.

I've now convinced myself the hold up is on Conroy. And that Fitz is playing hardball and not even offering Holtz! Going for the drama here, why not! Probably unrealistic but it be fun if he got him for our 1st and Grits/Lenni-like pkg

      Hear me out....

Throughout season, Fitzgerald has hinted he is looking for upgrades on blueline and in net. I am sure he has spoken to other GMs in previous months about what he is and what he is not willing to move. I am sure other GMs have seen Holtz's TOI and have been asking about him for months. And as we know from Meier deal, Fitzy has always valued Holtz highly...and likely balked at including him.

But I think something changed Fitzy's mind on how expendable Holtz is to team. Maybe it was the contract discussions he was supposed to have with Toffoli's camp over all-star break, or maybe he got better reading of the upcoming UFA winger market, or maybe he got news from Gritsyuk's camp now that their season is almost over, or maybe he found cheap options elsewhere...whatever it is, something changed his view. And once he became comfortable moving Holtz, he probably offered him up to Calgary, Anaheim, Nashville, others for a goalie (in different packages). All could use him. And Calgary bit first.

When the trade news/rumors came out (but didn't happen)....people reacted. Markstrom got pissed, as we saw in his media availability the other day when he snapped at a reporter. Tanev and Hanifin saw that and pushed for swifter conclusions to their situations. Conroy starts to focus on the two UFAs. Other GMs read that Holtz is available for goalie and try to get out front. Trotz books some radio interviews (where he names Fitzy directly!). Kent Hughes books an interview where he opens with a very candid take on selling his goalies in this market. Don Waddell does an interview where he says his team is not buying a goalie. News from Edmonton and Toronto is that they too are out of goalie market. And Jarmo Kekalainen gets fired (don't know if its related...but if he passed up Holtz for Merzlikins, maybe that was last straw).

Honestly, it sounds to me like Fitzy is driving this train.

I had been worried we would make some dumb reactionary trade for a goalie. That isn't my concern anymore.
