Description

Bit of a weird one, but trying to think a little outside the box.

The value here for SJ is to guarantee they get NJ's first instead of their 2nd. Its still very possible NJ make's the ECF, but it looks less likely than it did last summer unless they make some moves.

NJ sheds two years at 3.4m for Vanecek, shores up goaltending and adds speed and forward depth. If it all works out and they get to the ECF, then the Sharks keep the NJ 2nd too.

Basically if NJ makes the ECF then they got a camp dump and two solid rentals for the value of a 2nd round pick (because the Sharks would have gotten their 1st in this scenario anyway), and if they don't make the ECF they've only given up the difference between a low 1st and a low 2nd in value, still get to make a pick this year, and get a jump on resigning Kahkonen if they like him in net.

The Sharks might already own NJ's 2024 1st. The 2nd they got in the Meier trade becomes a 1st if NJ makes the ECF.

I think this is a fair trade.

I might keep it simple and remove Duclair and the condition that SJ can keep the 2nd if NJ makes the ECF. Just Kahkonen for Vanecek and making the 2nd a 1st regardless if NJ makes the ECF.

If NJ wants Duclair too, add a 3rd.
