1st would be top 10 protected, moved to next year if NJD is in the top 10.

2nd would be a 3rd unless the NJD make the ECF, to which it gets upgraded to a 3rd

That might be enough for you to get Markstrom; but definitely not Markstrom and Tanev.

The retention definitely needs to be rethought, Tanev's is fine, but obviously, based on the failed deal that maybe almost materialized, Conroy is not a fan of retaining on Markstrom. He could be persuaded with a piece like Nemec involved, but not 50% for dang sure, and any retention would cost the Devils more.

But in all honesty, Daws isn't a bad goaltending option to hang with Wolf in the future, maybe? ... Holtz, a 1st, a 2nd, and Nemec would be pretty nice adds to Calgary's re-tool.

If the rumored asking price for Tanev is roughly a 2nd round pick-ish at the moment, perhaps a not too substantial plus, then, in this scenario, you're basically looking at Nemec, Holtz and a 1st for Markstrom, and a 2nd and Daws for Tanev. That looks like a pretty good return to me, retention adjustments pending! And in all honesty, since Calgary won't accept 50% retention on Markstrom, the Devils probably wouldn't part with all of Nemec, Holtz, Daws and their 1st for a few months of Tanev and the couple years of Markstrom.

The Devils would get Markström for 2.5 years.

Indeed.. "the Devils probably wouldn't part with all of Nemec, Holtz, Daws and their 1st for a few months of Tanev and the couple years of Markstrom." ... the extra half year I didn't mention specifically does mean an extra playoff run, granted, but I still don't feel it makes all that difference giving up Nemec in the deal. He, not Hamilton, is the future of their right side. Hamilton will age and still be good, but not as good as Nemec will be.

If you offered Markstrom 50% retained, Hanifin 50% retained, and Yegor back for Nemec we’d still pass.

Yeah, as good as Markstrom has been this season there’s not shot NJ gives up Nemec for a 34 year old goalie and rental dman. Assuming it’s Nemec + Holtz + a 1st for Markstrom and that Daws and the 2nd is for Tanev, that would be significantly more than any goalie has gotten in a trade probably ever. It’s more than Eichel returned as a 25 year old 1st line center, and asking for more than that is crazy imo

Complete list of reasons to move Nemec:
-quinn demands a trade to New Jersey

Complete list.

And even then I’d give everything else possible to avoid putting Nemec in. Heck I’d retain 50% on Hamilton to avoid giving up nemec

Remove the retention on Markstrom and Calgary probably does it. But NJ fans won't like it. They don't want to give up Mercer and Nemec is worth more than Mercer. Pretty much everyone who knows anything thinks Mercer has the potential to be an elite while nobody other than some NJ fans think the same of Mercer.

Myself I view Nemec as having a very good chance of becoming a top pair defenseman and possibly an elite one. Mercer I see as middle 6 center who'd make a decent 2nd line winger too but not a 1st line player. IOW Mercer's floor is more certain but Nemec's ceiling is much higher. Talking realistic ceiling not pie in the sky homer fanboi dreams about how if everything goes right he could become more...
