Rangers don't need another big contract like Ovechkin.. Plus the Rangers wont give up Vesey, or the picks because we need the picks to better our system.. dont see this working out for the Rangers IMO

While Seaschell makes fantastic points from a hockey perspective, from a sports marketing perspective, the Rangers have a ton of cable subscribers to please, so they will always need the biggest superstar they can get, so unless Crosby is leaving Pittsburgh soon, New York takes this deal in a heartbeat, with three times as many draft picks and prospects, and then fills in their depth, as they always have, with accomplished veterans who think it might be fun to live in New York for a couple years, and play with Ovechkin and Shattenkirk, while Henrik gets one more shot at the title. This is how New York has operated for decades. See also: Jagr, Staal, Bure, Messier, Gretzky...

As to the roster above, what I like about it is that it looks at a mix of young skilled players from around the league to keep the Caps competitive right away. What I disagree with is, if the Caps decide to move on from Ovechkin, which they shouldn't and won't, then why keep other established players like Carlson, Holtby, Niskannen, and Backstrom around? If you're assuming they have three sophomore defensemen they can count on, and Orlov, then why not convert all of the above veterans into six extra first round draft picks next summer, and as many established players and prospects? I think the draft in 2018 is supposed to be pretty deep. With seven picks in the first round, Washington can build an amazing future, and have a rivalry with Vegas throughout the '20s. The hard part would be the secrecy necessary to pull off six blockbuster trades simultaneously, and get fair value. That, and recovering from all the salary dumps that come back in return.
