Description
It's not exactly clear to me.

The closest comparables that I can find for Markstrom are the trades for Darcy Kuemper, Frederik Andersen, Cory Schneider and Semyon Varlamov.

If you go ahead and pretend no team will answer a call about a surplus goalie, sure.

not actively being shopped =/= not available

And again I'd rather stay with Daws+Vitek+Schmid before putting mercer, let alone mercer+ for Markstrom

Again, you really don't think before putting out ideas. You have nothing to back anything up other than your own personal feelings. You don't research rosters, situations, etc...

Just like when you create AGM's that you boast ignore all rules; it's because you don't understand what goes on in trades. An intelligent person knows when they don't know something and tries to learn rather than continue try and convince people they know what they're talking about when they don't.

Where are we acquiring players with a higher ceiling though.

Mercer has 60-70 point 1RW/Upper echelon 2C potential

If you can get Mercer you pull that trigger immediately especially for Marky.

NJ isn't moving Mercer. A 1st, good prospect and Schmid should be near what it takes to get Markstrom. I doubt they'd want Vanecek because he's not much better than the other goalies CGY currently has, and Schmid at least still has potential.

My problem would be him reaching that potential. His whole career thus far has been on a rebuilding team, with rookies or not so skilled older players. If we take him and get rid of Marky he may never reach the heights because he’s been on a losing team for the most important years of his career.

Shall we go to some facts?

-Goalies historically are the least valued position in hockey, look back through any trades to see this. The biggest goalie trade we've seen in the last decade was 9th overall for Cory Schneider, who was in his mid 20s and had been a top 5 goalie over the last 3 years (1st in SV%, GAA, 2nd in GSAx behind only Henrik). The comparable there would be a guy like Swayman
-GMs rarely pay for expensive term on older players. It is usually the thing shipped out
-The goalie market is trending down from where it was. The newest top of the market goalie contracts are about 10% of the cap (Sorokin, Helle). Henrik got 13%. Price got 14%, Bobrovsky got 12.5%
-Goalies are getting drafted lower and lower

Every time where teams put their money or assets where their mouth is they show that goalies are not a high valued asset in the NHL

    Meanwhile, young cost controlled forwards.

Kirby Dach got 13th overall+. Let's take a comparison on his production pre trade to Mercers
Newhook got a 1st and a 2nd. When's the last time a goalie got that? and he had accomplished nothing

    Going into Markstrom specifically:

Objectively, there are approximately 2 possible buyers for unretained Markstrom. Carolina and NJD. Neither would want to take him unretained if possible because it significantly harms their cap position down the line, but they can afford it.

Retained you maybe add toronto and edmonton. Wait never mind no way Calgary trades a 50% markstrom to treliving or the other team in berta.

-Markstrom is 34 years old. Objectively goalies from age 34-36 (markstrom over the life of his contract remaining) have not had good results
-Markstrom has a very expensive contract. Just 7 goalies will make more over the life of his contract (assuming 8+ mill extension on Saros). Over the next 3 years there are significantly more than 8 goalies I'd rather have than age 34-36 markstrom
-Markstrom has a full NMC. As much as you may pretend it doesn't, that lowers his value, both by lowering potential bidders and by making him IMPOSSIBLE to dump if/when he falls off with age

He scored nearly 30 goals on a team that won a playoff series last year. He's won 1 playoff series in his 2 years. Calgary has won 2 in the last 18 years

You have a guy who NJD healthy scratched in the playoffs last year as your number 1 center.
