I believe it was an option year as I have seen it both ways.
For instance:
“After appearing in his second All-Star Game in 2003, Schneider was dealt at the trade deadline to the Detroit Red Wings for two players and two draft picks. The Kings had shopped Schneider around as he was set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.“
Also says some places that he signed a 3-year contract when he signed in LAK. That was his third season there.
You wiki quote is uncited, I wouldn't trust that over ESPN and various Detroit area publications at the time.
LA Times writer Jim Hodges wrote on August 12, 2000 that
"Schneider, a free agent whose last employer was the New York Rangers, signed a one-year contract with the Kings..." That one-year contract was for the 2000-01 season.
So the 3-year contract he signed with LA was 2001-02 through 03-04. Detroit traded for him March 11, 2003, so he played the remainder of the 02-03 year with Detroit and had another year left on his 3-year deal after that.
His capfriendly page lines up with that. 2000-01 he made $2M in LA (the one-year contract) then over the next three years he made $3.25M, $3.5M and $3.75M, respectively. Nearly half of that time was in Detroit.
Ergo, he wasn't a rental.
