doesn't help the pens at all. Tanev is a great player but the pens need scoring.

while the 3rd pairing is abysmal, trying to fix it doesn't make them a playoff team. They would need to replace to coach for that.
This team is in no position to trade out draft picks and everyone knows it.

Smith is also a better player than people give credit for. Next year is a contract year....watch out. I'd hold onto him instead of trading for a rental they can't keep.

The asking price for Christopher Tanev is a C prospect and a 2nd round pick without retention add a 1st round pick at 50% retained.

pens aren't trading picks for anyone, they are in no position.
Nor do I see this fixing the penguins and they can't afford to keep him.

there isn't really a watch and see about it.
This team has no business moving picks at this point.
They already might end up with a top 10 pick this year, meaning next years 1st pick is possibly leveraged.
It goes without saying even the 2nd and 3rd round picks gonna have a decent amount of value.
They just aren't a good enough team to keep risking assets. They need a more conservative approach. Playing youth, pick up here and there in FA.
There isn't much this team can do to be a cup contender, they just aren't one.

All in and rebuild after next year when Sid leaves.

yes because the guy who's been nothing but a class act for the organization is just going to up and leave without giving the organization a heads up to his plans.

He's a penguin for life. He made that decision a long time ago. He will retire there and the team will sign him for as long as he's willing to play.

His contract is up, obviously he is going to speak to them about it in advance. The team will want it to, as they won’t win with that core. Sid will still retire a Pen and will always be remembered as a Pen. They won’t make him suffer his final years there. Him leaving has nothing to do with his class. He has done everything and more for that city in franchise and after next year the time will come for the team to let him go chase another cup elsewhere.

You are sadly mistaken.
He's not leaving and jumping ship. This is a team that took on Jack Johnson for him. Costing them games. He knew that, he didn't care it was more about helping his friend. Hell they are still paying it off. If you think he's going to just bail on them to "chase a cup" when he's got 3 already you are kidding yourself. If he was so consumed with winning a cup, he wouldn't have been pushing to bring Jack Johnson in.

If you actually believe that Crosby doesn’t want to win and he brought in Jack Johnson himself because he wanted to lose (Jack Johnson won a cup the year after he left Pittsburgh btw) then you’re ****ing ****

You’re honestly saying that Sidney Crosby wanted his buddy on the team more than winning? And Jack Johnson is still employed by the way and is a Stanley cup champion. He is only as bad as you think to people like you who know nothing.

what I'm saying is, he wanted his close friend to have a financial contract that got him out of the financial trouble he was in. Yes that is true.
It's a shame you can't figure that part out. Only in your head is the most important thing to the players hockey.
you lost all credibility when you try to say Jack Johnson is a good defenseman. everyone is laughing at you troll.

What is the logic behind the Penguins overpaying for a rental player without retention and another asset returning to Pittsburgh?

No dummy. That’s not what you said and you are backtracking because you sounded like an absolute moron. Not saying he is a “good” d man by nhl standards but anyone who gets drafted top 5, plays 15+ years in the nhl, makes tens of millions of dollars, wins a Stanley cup and plays for team USA isn’t as bad as people like you say, you stupid ****
