Why would we do this?

Markstrom would be our 3rd best goalie in terms of Sv% but would be most expensive. Also, Cowan is untouchable unless we get a stud player with term.

Conroy isn't retaining no 50% on Markstrom.

The ones likely getting retained are, Tanev, Hanifin (If not re-signed) and Lindholm.

The flames would be absolutely insane to decline this even with the 50% retention

Brodie doesn't waive for Calgary.

Sorry Jones and Robertson aren't that great and the picks are late. Pretty sure that Conroy can get far better than this for Tanev and Markstrom 50% retained for the next 2.25 years or so.

robertson is on a 20 goal pace, is young, and jones has been better than markstrom with no cap hit issues. No team ever will give up a top 4 defenseman, a young player having a breakout season, a prospect worth a 1st, an actual 1st, their starter goalie and a 5th for a terribly inconsistent goalie who got absolutely torched last time in the playoffs with a high cap hit and a pending ufa with injury issues and is old

Robertson is young and on pace for something like 20 goals this season.
Cowan was just picked in the first round last year and is killing the OHL.
Jones could probably get a 3rd at minimum.
Then a fifth

Conroy wouldn’t want to pay Markstrom 3m for the next couple years but Calgary won’t be competing for a bit. And that is a haul for a rental D and a wildly inconsistent goalie, who last year was brutal and has just been okay this year.

Leafs are essentially the same team after this and we gave up futures
