Description
TOR needs two things, CAP space before the season starts and a top 4 RHD. They won't get a top pairing guy because they A) can't afford the CAP hit B) Don't want to give up Marner, Nylander, or Matthews which is obviously what it would take to get a stud D on an ELC.

Their trade chips would be Bozak, Komorov, JVR, Kappanen, Rychel, and Dermott but again, none of those will fetch a top 4RHD on their own.

Here's where Myers comes into play. If he's healthy and ready to go then he's a top 4 RHD capable of playing in all situations. If Trouba has truly rescinded his trade request that bumps Myers to the third pairing. Winnipeg could chose to keep Myers and Enstrom as the third pairing and have a very nice top 6 D core but that's a lot of money to pay a third pairing between Myers and Enstrom.

TOR could solve both their issues in one trade. Clear CAP space as well as getting a RHD without giving up any of their young assets. Myers would have to come with the 2018 1st conditional pick as insurance to Myers health if the trade occurs before the season starts.
Basically it's either Myers and a 7th for JVR or a 2018 1st for JVR which is still fair payment for a rental regardless, or they get the top 4 RHD they're looking for that comes off the books when Marner and Matthews will be getting their new deals.

Why would Winnipeg do this? Winnipeg's top 6 in top 5 in the league. The one thing they need upfront is a 3c. This is just not good.

Not sure how interested the Leafs would be a slow often-injured Tyler Myers, even though he is big and right-handed. I'd make some adjustments to your proposed deal. Leafs send Nathan Horton (the longer of their 2 LTIRs), JVR and Jake Gardiner to Jets for Jacob Trouba and a 1st round draft pick, no conditions attached to it.

Leafs aren't getting Trouba which was part of the whole upper portion "They won't get a top pairing guy because they A) can't afford the CAP hit B) Don't want to give up Marner, Nylander, or Matthews"
You don't get a top 10 D in the league without giving up one of those guys which they won't. I understand Myers isn't as attractive which is why he's bumped to our third pairing and his health issues are why a conditional 1st is attached to the deal.
WPG also isn't taking Horton's deal because though they can afford to take a hit with Lupal this year, much like TOR in 2 years they won't be able to take that hit and will have to move it with a good young prospect just to get rid of it to be able to sign Laine.

The reason they do this, is because it adds even more depth and puts them in contention for the CUP NOW while they're young studs are on ELCs. JVR makes them arguably #1 upfront, with a D-Core that's still excellent so yeh, I think they'd do this all day

Easy yes from both sides. JVR adds to a ridiculous top 9, TOR wins on either front in that if Myers IS healthy, they get a CAP releif to start the season which they need, and a top 4 RHD and if Myers isn't healthy, they get a high rental price (maybe could get a prospect as well still but I think Myers will be fine) with WPG's 1st to continue stocking the cupboards which they'll need in a couple years when they're facing CHI like problems when you've got 3 guys eating 30% of the CAP in Marner, Nylander and more so Matthews (especially after that McDavid contract)

Their Dcore is good not even close to excellent and you just made it much thinner. Winnipeg will have injuries to their defense likely a few. Get the depth there not up front where they have lots of talent. Do jets fans not see how injured Enstrom was last season? What about Kulikov (back injury one of the most recurring injuries in hockey). Also Buff is 260lbs and getting older he will start missing some games and Nogier is one of the worst 6th dmen in the league he is an ahl level dmen. Fix the problems the jets have (defense depth) don't make it worse. By all means add depth upfornt once the dcore depth issue gets fixed because that is the big issue. Even keeping myers jets need another nhl dmen.
