He basically said he only wanted to play for toronto or buffalo, and toronto didn't have room. So the Sabres paid an offense only winger 9 mill per long term. They weren't even negotiating against another team.

This year the top top three were aquired by him plus 4 of the 7 defensemen Dahlin, Samuelson, Jokiharju and Johnson.
Last year and this year, the top three centers were his players.
