2006 Lowe Deadline in 2024

Description
In 2006, the Oilers added Chris Pronger, Roloson, and Samsonov. All 3 pieces were absolutely crucial in their cup run, and plugged various holes in the roster. That team wasn't a playoff team prior to acquiring those guys.

These oilers are significantly better -- Moneypuck has them rated 1st in xG% all situations, and 5v5, by solid margins. One could easily argue that an average goalie would propel them to top 5 in the standings, and an even better goalie would make them real killers.

Let's extrapolate those moves made in 2005 and 2006 (Pronger was in the off season, not the deadline) into 2024. We'd be looking at a move for:
- A 1A goalie
- A top 4 D (no pronger-esque D man is available)
- A 2nd line winger

Ironically, that fits exactly what the Oilers need today. So do we think it's realistic in a cap world for all 3 of these moves to get done? The Jackets did it with essentially the same amount of picks/prospects available to them. If Ken Holland is truly all in, it's possible.

I highly doubt Lou trades Varlamov especially at the deadline. I wouldn’t mind the package but there’s no shot we’d take Campbell back

I wouldn't say this is really a selling move though. Sorokin can play 75% of the games... A team desperate for a goalie would totally pay a ton for Samsonov, who is way better than a backup. You're downgrading the backup goalie, taking on cap, and getting a ton of picks back which you could just turn around and use on a rental

Didn't the oilers try to trade for Varlamov in 2022 and he wouldn't waive?

That was Toronto, and he doesn't have a full NTC anymore. Very likely all Canadian teams are on there tho

If the islanders flip Bourgault + 3rd for a backup while also dumping Campbell ill take it. I just dont want Campbell on the books

https://oilersnation.com/news/apparently-semyon-varlamov-wont-waive-his-no-trade-clause-for-the-edmonton-oilers Varlamov wouldn't wave for Edmonton and he does have a full NTC the next two years of his contract.

On the sharks deal no retention I’d be ok white that, with retention you lose the 4th going back.

-Sharks wouldn't be sending back a pick here - Duclair has shown he can play well with good linemates and has been one of the only scoring threats on a bad Sharks team this year. Even based on his current 35ish point pace, I think he would get back more than a mid/late 2nd rounder with full retention on his own, without the Sharks needing to have to include additional draft capital.

-It's been said upthread, but Varlamov has a full NTC and has already been rumored to have nixed a trade to Edmonton in the past. I'd also argue that taking on the 4x$3.75M left on Jack Campbell's contract is a heavy burden to add into the trade - the Isles take on the same term for a backup goalie, except he costs them $1M more and has a much worse track record. Bourgault is 21 and not really forcing himself out of the AHL currently, and the 1st will most likely be in the 17-25 range. I don't know what the cost of dumping Campbell would realistically cost, but I don't think there's enough value here even if you look past the fact that Varlamov isn't likely to go anywhere.

-I think the Flames pass here. It'll be easier for them to flip out Tanev at the deadling with 50% retention and get a solid return without having to take on extra term and salary - if this was Ceci's walk year, I would look at it a little differently, but if I'm Calgary I don't love taking on an extra year of an over-30 dman with a $3.25M hit (plus giving up a 4th & a 7th?) just to get Broberg and a 2nd rounder three drafts away.
