Unrelated, but I don't get how I've seen Canucks fans demand JVR, Kapanen and a 1st for Tanev, when you're saying Reinhart for Tanev, Sutter and a 1st is fair. I feel like Buffalo wouldn't accept as its not what they need IMO, but I believe value wise it is much more fair for Tanev.
Canucks fans don't want JVR at all. Taking him is seen as a cap dump since neither the Canucks nor the Leafs want to re-sign him due to his age and where he fits in the lineup. Kapanen didn't crack the Leafs lineup, so he's a 21 year old with a question mark. The Leafs' 1st isn't a top 10 pick these days, it's closer to what you're used to thinking of as a 2nd. Look at what Hamilton and Hamonic took to get; D take longer to mature and there's fewer of them.
Tanev is proven and outplays shutdown D that generally cost $2 million more in cap hit. He fits smoothly with any partner and single-handedly takes a team from terrible to decent when he's on the ice.
Why does Tanev's name come up? Sedins and Edler have hard NMCs and aren't an option. Tanev is very valuable, in large part due to the cheap contract, but there's a gap between his age and the core of prospects who will give the Canucks a future chance at the Cup. There's no sense in letting that value go to waste. Phone Stamkos, Subban, or Tavares who've played with Tanev as kids and get their opinion of Rielly and Babcock weren't enough endorsements because I guess you didn't watch Rielly play with Tanev on Team Canada at the World Championships.
Ask any fanbase on here and they'll tell you the Leafs are living in an imaginary world believing they can talk down the value of players they want, while imagining there is a perfect fit desperately waiting for them to release some has-been they have fond memories of.
