With the first trade my opinion is McLeod is better than Veleno, but he is sacrificed to make the salary for the goaltending upgrade work.

Second trade, Oilers go for Maatta who has been a nice, quite and steady defender. He really helped Hronek elevate his game last season and the hope is he can help Bouchard as well. 1.5M cap hit will salary be very helpful for this season and next.

Oilers could really use a top pair RHD but the only one I feel that fits that bill would be Tanev. I don't see Calgary trading Tanev to the Oilers and the Oilers shouldn't be spending the assets since their cupboard is quite barren.
I feel Ekholm is the best bet to play top pair as the only available options are Walker, Carrier/ Fabbro (if they can even be had) plus a bunch of other depth players. None I would consider qualified enough for top pair, at least over Ekholm. By adding Maatta save moving Ekholm to top pair, this would allow Ceci to play third pairing (where he belongs) and likely give them a more consistent defensive core.
