Devils defense ranks according to various model (including the player/puck tracking data the devils have)
- NST: 15th
- MP: 18th
- EH: 14th
-JFresh: 13th
- HV: 8th (with implied passing)
- Devils Player/Puck Data: 10th (as of the Penguins game)

Devils goaltending:
- NST: 32nd
- MP: 32nd
- EH: 30th
- JFresh: 30th
- HV: 29th
- Devils: 28th

There's a very clear problem to be solved and it's not team defense. But if you want to do this trade for Zadorov/Wolf, fine with me!

Goaltending is a long-term issue to be addressed…if Devils are spending that much, would they do it for a guy with 1 career NHL game? No chance.

No one else is available anymore for a long term fix except Askarov (maybe).

That ship sailed when we didn't get Swayman at the draft.

Agree with NHLFan above. I get it but Askarov hasnt played more than a game at the NHL level, he should not command that much. Tighten up the D and d zone play would help a ton

I’m sure Askarov will be a good. But I think we will improve ourselves with…

1. Good health
2. Time/Experience
3. Better puck protection in back-end

Vanecek was out of position on two of the goals last night. He did not play well. But over long-term…if our 20 skaters are playing as well as we think they can, we can win with average / above average goaltending. If there is a goalie move for a solid reliable G with a little term that doesn’t cost us two valuable prospects, sign me up.

It's the juicy rebounds back out front. If he could clean that up jeez we'd be in better shape. And always the goal or 2 that's breaks our back that seems to be stoppable but isn't for him

Rebounds are definitely an issue (not quite Gillies-esque but an issue).

But if we are playing 5v5 they way we did for most of last year (and at times this year), many of those opportunities never come in first place.

I'm not trading more than the eichel package for a goalie with 1 NHL game, who MAYBE could be a top 10 goalie, 3 years down the line

Agreed, the other think is how teams are getting the odd man rush and also sneaking behind the D

I agree with this. But we havent gotten average or above average goaltending. we're getting bottom-5 goaltending.

its hard for me to have an opinion about this. I watch hockey every night but on non-devils games im usually doing something like working or reading or something else, so I can't be confident in saying that the Devils are doing this at a higher rate than other teams.

In general when watching a neutral game, I can see what plays are defensive mistake and what plays are high-skill creation. It's harder to do that with the Devils as I'm more likely to assign credit, good and bad, to the Devils players because I am emotionally invested.

Most models have us playing at 5v5 the way we did for most of last year.

this is not more than the eichel package, cmon. It's a prospect who has struggled in the NHL but still has a high ceiling, a great prospect who is playing amazingly in college but is still 5'10" which is a tough obstacle for NHL defensemen, and a first round pick.

I understand it's steep, but high-end goaltending prospects aren't traded. Neither are long-term solutions in net. It's all home-grown.
