Calgary gets out of an albatross contract.

Washington's window centres around an ageing core. Similar to Pittsburgh acquiring Karlsson, Washington is in a position where if 4 years from now Huberdeau is an albatross, it won't really matter.

Washington gambles on Huberdeau turning it around with a change of scenery. Mantha is only in the trade for cap flexibility and redundancy. At heart, the trade is Huberdeau for FC.

The value going to Calgary is getting out of a toxic buyout proof contract and being able to hit the reset button and move on without retention. Mantha's money is off the books at the end of the season.
