I know Canucks media and fans talk a lot about moving money from the wings to defense and centre - "the reallocation of cap space" - and I like the concept and agree with it. One of the challenges with a trade like these, or even one that moves a guy like Garland along, is the Canucks don't have a lot of wing depth. This proposal really highlights that for me. In particular, the left side is WEAK. Unless guys like Hoglander and Podkolzin really step up this year, I just don't know how Vancouver can move two wingers without suffering offensively (an area that the underlying metrics already suggest they are expected to regress).
I think you can move one, and it is likely Garland given the rumours. But I think you have to hold on to Boeser because of the offense he brings, his ability to play shutdown minutes on JT's line, and so that you aren't forced to rush a guy like Podkolzin into the lineup later this year. Ideally he can stay in the AHL most of the year and have a year where is gets to be the guy and be in a consistent team environment.
But yeah...that wing depth is not great..
