I think this would be worth the gamble for them. Montreal has a crazy amount of picks and good young prospects. They make this trade, since it has very high upside and because Laffy fits their core age group but if it doesn't work out, it doesn't hurt them much.

That would be an overpay from the habs, Laf is underperforming remove the 1st round pick then I do it.

I doubt Evans holds much value for New York. Quick hasn’t been very good — maybe add a goalie? I’m not that familiar with either team’s assets.

Evans and Ylonen don't hold much value to anyone. They would hold a little but not crazy amounts. New York can use a bit of depth and Evans and Ylonen would help out in that regard. They are both serviceable pieces.

The 1st and the 2nd are the brunt of the value in this.

I don't think it is an overpay. He would have slightly more value than Newhook based on age and based on performance so far.

This is similar to the Newhook return but it is slightly better for New York than what Colorado got.

If Lafreniere falls out of favour after more than 3 seasons, he's not going to get that kind of return.



I'm not sure what the timetable is here though. When in the hypothetical scenario is Lafreniere falling out of favour? Because if its mid-season or deadline, then it doesn't really match the general range of what Montreal has paid in a similar situation (Dach, Newhook). Montreal may not even want Lafreniere at that point.

Either way, Montreal wouldn't just have the pick top-10 protected. If they were to make the trade a trade using the 2025 pick it would the higher of the there's or the pick coming from Calgary unless one or both is top-10/12/whatever, at which point it would be the lower of them.
