Description
Okay here me out:

F1: Ovi-Backy-Mantha.
Ovi is obviously staying on the top line, Backstrom seems to be skating well and could slot back in as the playmaker for Ovi due to their insane chemistry, Mantha looks WAY better so far this camp (he is looking like what the caps have wanted from him sense they traded for him)
F2: Milano-Strome-Wilson.
Milano brings a bit of speed to the lineup and looked alright last season (the caps have great LW prospects but nobody that is truly ready for 2nd line roles), Strome proved last season that he can be a 1st line option and will be able to provide a high tier second line center role, Wilson is the option to move up to the first line if Mantha can not cut it, but in a second line role he will be able to give the Capitals another line that can go out and make something happen outside the top line.
F3: McMichael, Kuzy, Oshie.
McMichael has been looking good in training camp and it is his spot to lose this season, Kuzy is seemingly falling out of favor with the Capitals but will offer an Elite 3rd line Center for them moving forward this season, Oshie is the lockerroom heart of this team and if he can stay healthy he will be able to provide depth scoring throughout the season.
F4: Protas, Dowd, NAK.
Protas has seemingly been shuffled down in training camp but I think he makes a push to return to the lineup, Dowd is a great 4th line center and will keep his role, NAK is the guy I think will be a waiver claim this season but as of know he will play at the start of the season while Max gets healthy.
D1: Fehervary, Carlson.
They have chemistry already and Fehervary compliments Carlson very well. They both can move up the ice well and Fehervary can be defensively responsible unlike Carlson.
D2: Sandin, Jensen.
Sandin brings a solid two way defensive style to this paring and Jensen brings a solid d-minded game.
D3: AA, TVR
AA gets his shot to secure the 3rd pairing gig this season due to Joel's injury and TVR is set as the 3rd pairing right defender.
Goalies: Keumper, Lindgren
This is the most obvious part here.
Scratches: HHA and Malenstyn
HHA will have the chance to be the 7th defenseman and jump into the lineup if AA struggles.
Malenstyn has been playing well in training camp and will have a chance to try and battle Protas for the final spot in the lineup.

People are sleeping on this team. If Kuz and Mantha bounce back and Backy is back to his old self, it's a very deep team. But we'll see what happens. They also have the ability to be a bottom 5 team if everything goes bad.

Too much truth there, my expectation is that they will make a push to be a wildcard

Agreed and if they want to be contenders make a move for a legit top 6 guy, probably.

Unless Max can get back to where he was previously I agree. I would like to see them trade Kuzy for a solid top 6 wing option and let Backstrom, Strome, Dowd, and McMichael or maybe even Phillips if CMM stayed on the wing play the middle for the team. I am very high on Phillips and would like to see what he could do with a real crack at the NHL.

The only problem I have with this is that the Caps are 2.3 million over the cap. I'd assume Pacioretty begins on LTIR but they still need to clear 300K, which I would expect to come from waiving Aube-Kubel (or maybe Edmundson on LTIR? I doubt it). I'd expect the 4th line to end up being Malenstyn-Dowd-Protas, with Snively as the scratch, which should clear that extra 300K.

Other than the Cap, I think (though I would like to see HHA start in the NHL) 7D is probably LuJo's job to lose, since he'll be waiver eligible while HHA is not.

LuJo has been improving but I still think there are more talented people in front of him like HHA. Maybe if he proves himself in camp than he will have a shot but he has been a disappointing draft selection since day one.
