Obviously, it was much more common before the cap started.

Even so, I think using THN as the sole guide is gonna be a little misleading. I just checked Wheeler's top 50 drafted prospects from 2019, and 17 have been dealt either as full prospects or very early in their NHL time, including five of the top 18. Guys like Dach, Newhook, Boqvist, Glass, Smith, etc. who weren't listed by THN.

Also...there are cases where players rise up to top-25 after they were traded (for instance Brock Faber was #41 at time of trade, is now in top-25).

Think it's fun to see how uncommon it is for top prospects to be traded despite how common it is on mocks.

I use THN since they have track record going back decades....so useful when putting historical lists together.

As for the Wheeler / 2019 list...they were almost all traded well after that list came out.

I just picked one at random. My point was THN by itself doesn't quite give the full picture, though I understand your convenience reason.

But yeah, it typically doesn't pay off to trade a bunch of good prospects. Also, teams who tank and get a bunch of super high picks in a row aren't likely to trade them often - defeats the whole aim of the tank.

Yeah, that was tough. The combination of what was spent on Reinhart and Larsson vs what was obtained for Marino….rough. (But worked out okay for NJ)
