Fine by me. But why would San Jose do this?

if SJ is tanking and taking on this contract, they'll need to be enticed a little
I loved Myers in the peg, thought he played some really good hockey. I'd like to see him back there, but not sure how that works

Sharks already have too many 3rd pairing defenseman, BUT Myers owed $1 million in salary vs Labancs $5.875 million. Gotta imagine saving $5 million worth whatever headache adding Myers wound cause

Labanc was in doghouse for a long time last season, it was awkward

Many Canucks fans figured there would be some kind of deal like this with Myers after his bonus was paid by the team. Do we know if it's been paid now? I assume if Allvin had something in the chamber he'd want to pull the trigger immediately after that bonus payment to give the players involved a bit more time to get settled in their new locations.

I agree, the actual dollars would make this somewhat enticing for the Sharks, but even then VAN may have to add a mid-level pick or asset as the team getting much-needed cap relief. Cap space is king under the current system.

Myers is a replacement player at this point, he isn't worth anything at a 3 million cap hit. And it would be Vancouver who would have to pay someone to retain another 50%

I think the dollars saved are more than enough payment for a team like San Jose. If this was Chicago I would say different story. You look at the Sharks financials over the last 5 years and they weren't that good. Now I don't know anything about ownership and their finances but as on organization and business, saving almost $5M makes alot of sense. Looking at how the Karlsson trade went down, it seems like they wanted to save money. Right now they are on the hook for almost $5M in salary with the retention, this deal would basically eliminate that. Also seems like they took less return to not retain and save money. If they kept Karlsson, they owed him $39M. Now they are only on the hook for just over $26M plus have a bunch of cap flexibility in a few years. For a team in a small market, who is rebuilding, dollars saved is a big deal.

Just made a three team post with a bit more detail with how I think this should go down.

I agree with your assessment of Myers' game as a replacement player. But it all depends on the trade partner and the timing of a deal. If a team really wants to save money for the season then trading another bad contract with a lower cap hit but higher salary owing might be attractive (like in this scenario). Or if VAN waits until the deadline and retains 50% on Myers they could probably get a late pick back for him from a playoff team desperate to make an addition that maybe got outbid on better options. GM's do funny things when they start feeling pressure to make noise leading up to the playoffs.
