Detroit currently has 14 defensemen under contract and 10 more as prospects, that's way too many to develop. Acquiring Hanifin speeds up the process and gives them a known commodity that can play with Seider right away and he still has at least 8 more productive years. The Flames get back a high quality prospect in Sandin Pilikka and a trade asset in Maatta.

Detroit (having 3 good LD prospects) should definitely trade their only good RD prospect for a LD!

This isn't even mentioning the fact that Hanifin isn't worth this much.

This would be idiotic for Detroit.

We have the best prospect pipeline in the entire league on LD and are not going to trade for yet another one and absolutely not by giving up the best RD prospect we have when RD is our weakest position.

The problem with your comment is the Wings need the RHD that ASP and they have zero need for a LHD. So no. Also Hanifin is a pending FA where as ASP is cost controlled for years. Makes no sense to trade for a player who does not fit a need for a young good prospect who fills the RHD defenseman need

I completely agree Hanifin is a very good LHD but With Edvinsson and Wallinder there isn't a pressing need for him right now. RHD prospects we have ASP and Tuomisto/

...and Anton Johansson. He's looking to have a breakout year in SHL.

My friend, we often disagree on some subtle points. Here we are lol. I think if Hanifin will not re-sign anyway, then a replacement of Maatta, a 3rd, and a 2023 1st round selected, offense-minded/specialist/puckmover(?) right D... is right up this Flames fan's alley. I'm on side with a more robust re-tool, since "rebuild" is still verboten with this ownership. I'd love to see some high-end talent enter the pool, even if a few years away, especially when Hanifin isn't even interested in re-signing.

On the other hand, Yzerman has recently reconfirmed his commitment to building the right way, not letting a "playoffs or bust" attitude even enter his mind.

That said, this deal wouldn't make sense at all for Stevie. He is willing to wait and build from within.

Yes, he traded futures for DeBrincat, but the cat is still young, and the futures weren't that great, i.e. not in the team's future plans.

There's nothing subtle about this one I don't care for Maatta or Sandin. We don't really need a defenseman coming back in a Hanifin trade. Taking on both an older not very good LD who makes 3 mil per year and small RD prospect doesn't make sense when what the team really needs is a goal scoring forward. One might be ok depending on what else is coming to Calgary but not both.

Yeah I know where Sandin was selected I just don't think he's that good. We have Poirier and Morin for offensive defensemen in the system already. Both were taken quite a bit later than Sandin but they're both bigger and IMO have more offensive skill too. Size does matter especially on defense.

Hanifin is worth quite a bit we should be holding out for something we need or assets that can be used as part of a package in another trade to get what we need. A goal scoring forward preferably a right shot.
