I guess you're missing some context. Bear doesn't have a contract because he is expected to be out for half the year with injury. Also the contract vs no contract argument may be on of the weakest arguments I have ever seen. I suppose that Sheldon Dries >>> Patrick Kane. One is getting paid by an NHL team, the other is not.

He is a very good 3rd pairing d man, but really not much more than that. Ethan Bear is also just a really good 3rd pair d man on a good team. He hasn't shown to be better than Bear, so it makes no sense for the Canucks to give up much more than they paid for Bear, and they got Bear for scraps.
