The short-term improvement this would present for the Devils is nowhere near worth giving up the long-term gains Mercer is yet to experience.
I'd bet that in no more than 3 years Mercer will be at least as good as Nylander will be at that in point in time, in 4 years an outright better player than him, at the latest.
Why should a team just now entering a decade of perennial contention kneecap their competitive window like that? Where is the logic in it?
Besides, no team in the league would trade a top 6 fwd on an ELC for a pending UFA winger.
Those trades simply don't have happen due to that top 6 ELC fwd having inherently more value than that winger, even if they are as good as William Nylander.
To say nothing of adding picks on top of that.
