By subbing Crosby for Pettersson (the better player) you clear up enough cap to upgrade from Chychrun to Dahlin.

Fair enough, but it's Pettersson + Dahlin vs. Crosby + Chychrun and getting Dahlin would be worth it.

I mean in his one playoff run when he was just a 2nd year player he had 18 points in 17 games. And being able to upgrade Chychrun to Dahlin makes it worth it. Even if you think Crosby is better than Pettersson (which you can definitely argue), the gap between them isn’t as big as the gap between Dahlin and Chychrun
