While I think he gets signed around the $1.5M mark, when it's August and you're one of the last remaining free agents, you're not exactly able to be so picky.

Or you can wait for an injury in training camp and get a team in serious need . Btw I personally think it's 2+

Ehhh maybe. I think it's $1.5M - $2M , but I'm not gonna squabble about a few hundred thousand lol

I don't think players like him want to wait out injuries.

I think he'd retire rather than play that cheap. If he were willing to sign that cheap he'd already have a contract IMO

He's made 40 million and again if he were willing to sign that cheap he'd already be signed. I also think it's very weird and personal to assume someone would take an over 80% paycut

Again, to assume you know what a person's financial situation is a very weird thing to do. To your other thought, that's a very flawed way of looking at things; it's not that black and white at all.

So, assuming he takes an 80+% paycut isn't any weirder or personal?

When you look at some of the discounted salaries many players took this off-season it's not that weird. The flat-cap has had a profound affect on free agents. Players knowing the cap will be going back up significantly next year have been taking some pretty serious discounts.

You're also assuming you know how desired/valued Tatar is by other teams.

And those guys signed rather quickly. Besides one I've seen mentioned (Wheeler) is also already making 2.75 million above his salary. So that's kind of apples to grapefruit comparison

Tatar is a good Guentzel stand in but idk how you fit him In cap wise. He probably gets 2 million eventually when someone else gets hurt somewhere.

K'Andre Miller, who could have easily went to arbitration and scored a win-fall, took less than $4M knowing that he will get a much larger payday.

Just saying, in a normal world, Tatar, who will be 33 soon, is probably a $4/$4.5M player. At this point in the year, most teams have over 90% of their rosters secured with little wiggle room. He's gonna have to take at least half of what he's worth at this point and hope to cash in next season if he pumps out another 40ish point year.

Miller is also an RFA so, he didn't have much in the way of leverage. He also signed making over a million dollars more next year than he has in his career prior to this really bad comparison.

Honestly, my guess is that he has been talking to a team and waiting for something to be done by said team, to make room or finish a deal. Maybe it was the Karlsson deal or maybe it's still something else that is yet to happen by another team. But if it were the Karlsson deal then I would think another move needs to be made. Because I do agree he will get something in the region of 1.5 - 2 million. But NHL players are weird, he could be willing to play on a team for dirt cheap.

Could I guess but if I were his agent would probably be calling the Julien Brisebois,Don Waddell Jim Nil's of the world and already signed someone would be willing to pay that.

Yes do you really want to go through it if you're he or the team? It's an extremely adversarial process, especially when offered a million dollars per year more than you've made in your career to this point the next 2 years guarantee your financial future then go for the home run in 2 years. That agreement probably fell somewhere between what both sides offered and close to where both the team and player representative feel the award would be.

Well again, that depends on their long-term goal. I feel like you should be smart enough to look at the situation and see the nuance in all of this. I hope so anyway.

But hey, if you're just trying to argue for the sake of arguing, just let me know.

Nothing fell off. The Rangers were/are cap-strapped and offered Miller a bridge deal because they know he would have received far more than his current deal. Miller is betting on himself knowing in two years he's going to collect much more than signing a long-term deal now. This has become a fairly common practice.

I feel like you really just want to argue minutiae. Your theories are just wrong. You need to simply understand the ripple-effect of the flat cap. It's simple.
