But let's imagine all Leafs upcoming UFAs don't resign with the Leafs .....9 players, 44m. Wouldn't the Leafs just "reconstruct with that 44m? Players don't have to traded to do a rebuild. And certainly the Leafs are in win mode and won't be trading any good players for futures (like all Cup contending teams)

Edmonton isn't a one-and-done team, they're building for the long term. So even of they had the cap space this wouldn't make a lot of sense unless they could re-sign Matthews for a reasonable rate, which they can't.

Now if for some reason, the Leafs are "out of the playoffs" come TDL...maybe Matthews and Marner have been hurt all season but are eligible to come back around the playoffs, yeah the Leafs might be sellers.
