Grier would do that deal in a second. He'll flip Nylander and Brodie for a whole lot too. Treliving would probably be fired in a year for this deal.

But he can't as they have only one retention spot left.

Double the retention on Karlsson. He would still do that deal in a second.

Doubt it.
Let's say Brodie is for taking on Murray, so it turns into Nylander for EK and AD both retained.
Nylander can get a 1st + prospect. Brodie meh but contenders can't fit him at TDL since no more retention slots.
AD alone 50% retained can likely get a first from a contender.
EK 1.5-3mm retained will get a Nylander type return if not a little extra depending how much is retained.
This should be an easy no from SJ waste of retention for minimal assets.

Sharks have two retention slots currently open. Burns is the only contract they have retention on at the moment.

My bad, you're correct. I was counting these two plus Burns, but I doubt they'd still want to use all 3 spots up .

Brodie can fit easily at the TDL as cap is accrued daily. That alone is worth a 2nd. Duclair has never gotten a 1st in four trades. I'd say a 2nd and B prospect at most.
The fact you think Karlsson carries close to Nylander trade value is where the real delusion starts. Not even close to real world value without massive retention. Karlsson would easily pass through waivers if he could be waived. Nylander would be acquired immediately.

Well obviously, he hasn't been traded for just picks and hadn't hit 30 goals. Look at someone like Bertuzzi, 1st and 4th for a guy who produces similar but was making more. Granlund a 2nd and he's paid more and produces less, and Eller a 2nd too. Not out of the realm of possibility to get a late 1st for top 6 scoring.
No **** he would pass through. EK at around 8mm for 4 years has more current value than Nylander at 1, disagree if you want. Don't know why you're even talking about waivers when we're discussing EK's value with money retained.

Bertuzzi is versatile. Duclair is a offensive forward that really specializes in producing off the rush. Granlund is a complete liability and the front office that made that deal is still all unemployed. Karlsson is far less valuable than Nylander at the same exact cap hit. One is a consistent durable player in their prime with no NTC and one has been a liability 3/4 years with a full NMC.

Agree with the Bertuzzi and durability portions.

The extension uncertainty with Nylander is maybe what maybe makes me not like this. If SJ can flip him with an extension in place then sure I definitely think his trade value there will more than make this trade worthwhile for SJ.

Also have to take into account SJ owners are seemingly penny pinching to make this trade tougher to make for MG, and MM's 8mm and TJ's 7.5mm salaries don't help that.

I have no idea what San Jose's ownership has an appetite for. If they are getting cheap, that is going to make trading him even less advantageous. They didn't seem cheap when Wilson was on his mindless spending sprees. So it seems inconsistent if they are worried now. But then again they might not want a high cap hit player when rebuilding.

Very true lol. But now they know they'll be bad and don't want to spend to rebuild properly. The owner's a billionaire, I wish he would just allow 50% retention for a good return and have this all over with and get the rebuild really going.

dont get why san jose would do this. eating up 2 retention slots, taking on 7.5 million in salary for brodie, 6 million in salary for murray, and 6 million for nylander.

meanwhile, only trading away 10 million for karlsson and 2 million for duclair. this means they add 7.5 million in salary obligations and get 0 first round picks 0 prospects and 0 long term roster players (unless they somehow convince nylander to sign, which will again cost a ton of cash).

simply the wrong pieces for SJ to target in a karlsson trade. they are better off going after petry (low slary and only 2 years) and futures in order to add long term talent and reduce payroll
