Very unlikely trade first and foremost.
If Hughes thinks his team is ready to take the next step or will be by next year it might be time to strengthen up that D Core. Hands down Montreal has the worst defensive core in the NHL, back that up with the worst goalies in the league and they just can't go anywhere. With Boston and Tampa aging out of playoff spots and Ottawa and Detroit weaponizing towards a playoff spot Montreal might have to get into the race or risk losing the development of their prospects. EK65 is a great defenseman, some think he's a defensive liability but compared to who is on Montreal he's Jaccob Slavin. Montreal has no forechecking coming from the backend or neutral zone momentum changes, EK excels at both those things. EK on the Canadiens guarantees them an improvement over last season, maybe not playoffs but a serious improvement.
San Jose gains a good defensive prospect in Guhle to hopefully replace the hole Karlsson has left and Hutson is a top prospect. The second is for taking on Anderson's god awful contract (he hasn't hit 50 points in his career ffs). The first is for the 8 million dollars the Sharks will retain over four years.
