you are confusing with what he wants with what other teams want. Sure they could miss out by another team signing him, but the argument is can he get 7 years some where else and the answer is most definitely yes. And klingberg is not a good comparison he was several years older than debrincat is when leaving Dallas. Plays a completely different position and had been steadily declining for several years before hitting FA. And when you’re over 30 you’re likely not getting a 7 year deal. If his priority is 7 years then he will have that option. If his priority is going to a certain team he has the option as well. But none of these options gives Ottawa any leverage if he doesn’t want to sign for 7 years in Ottawa.
1. I am not confusing with what he wants with what other teams want.
DeBrincat wants to be paid like Timo Meier.
Other teams want to acquire DeBrincat and pay him at an aav closer to 8 million without giving him max term.
There's no confusion.
2. If a team wants to acquire a star player like DeBrincat when he needs an extension, they should be offering max term to get the deal done.
That isn't happening and if DeBrincat doesn't bounce back, then it won't happen next year either.
The answer is not definitely yes.
3. Klingberg is a good comparison.
He was offered an extension at 7 million x 8 by Dallas when no one else would and he turned it down.
DeBrincat was offered a long-term extension by Ottawa when no one else would and he turned it down.
Therein lies the comparison.
Everything else you mentioned about him is irrelevant.
4. DeBrincat's priority is a perfect scenario where he goes to a certain team and is paid like Timo Meier.
As a result, he is way in over his head because that scenario hasn't transpired for him yet.
Ottawa has leverage over DeBrincat because we hold his rights and we decide which team he is traded to.
And we also have additional leverage over DeBrincat from the fact that he's not getting max term on an extension from any other team.
It's not rocket science.
