The Caps are quite strapped. They have less than $1 mil in space and need two more forwards and another two skaters to get to 23 players.

Pacioretty will start the season on LTIR, giving the Caps plenty of space to use guys on ELCs.

When Pacioretty is ready to play, depending on Manthas performance so far they can demote him to the AHL and save about $1.1M of his cap hit. (Assuming Oshie doesn't have his annual autumn injury and end up on LTIR himself.)
