Description
Value may be adjusted as far as picks, but wanted to put in main structure of the trade

Andrew Fantucchio, NYI Hockey Now:
"The Islanders desperately need a puck-moving defenseman who can help out their power play and Karlsson is arguably the best player out there that fits that criteria. But I think there’s too many things that would prevent them from pulling off a deal.

Firstly, they’re incredibly tight on cap space with just $6.1 million. They’re going to shed at least some of Josh Bailey’s contract, which could give them at most $11.1 mil, but they also have other UFAs they’d like to re-sign.

Even then, the Islanders would have to give up multiple draft picks in the deal as well. They’re already low on picks this year and have given up their last four first-round picks and would have to include at least one or two more to get Karlsson.

I guess in short, Karlsson is an ideal fit for the Islanders, but they don’t have the space or means to trade for him at this time."

Think the 50% is off the table per Grier's previous and current comments on the matter. He indicated it would be an impossible sell to the owner, but not sure if that means he can pull off somewhere between 30-40%

I think this is the opposite of the direction the team should go imo
We NEED to get younger. most of the contracts for players over 30 will expire within the next 2-3 years. If we were there now, I'd say, yeah why not. But to me, this is the complete opposite way to go

The islanders need a puck moving defenseman so they should move their 23 YO high end puck moving defenseman and a 1st in a cap world? Where is the logic. Isles get hosed

The logic is that Karlsson is a massive upgrade over Dobson
It's if Isles want to compete now vs later, but totally get the previous poster's point that Isles should instead just start getting younger
they're at an inflection point

Saying he will be a massive upgrade is a huge reach considering Karlsson won’t be close to the defenseman he was this past season.

Dobson was the better defenseman in 21-22 season, karlsson was better last season. When taking into considering age and injuries, Dobson will likely have the better impact next season and he’s 7.5 mill cheaper

It's not a reach at all because Karlsson right now is completely better as an offensive defenseman.
Not sure what metric you're claiming Dobson was better in the 21-22 season but technically by points per game Karlsson was better. I can see you're not interested in honest discussions when trying to cherry pick a specific season, comparing a 50game season to a 80game season. Karlsson has been injured the last few years and he's fully back.
It's pretty safe to assume Karlsson will at least do 70-80pts next season.
We can assume Dobson will get to that point, but he's not now, which is the point of the trade. Also objectively, Dobson is never likely to peak to Karlsson's level.

XGAR (expected goals above replacement ) is the best way to measure a defensemans true overall impact. Dobson had a higher xGAR than karlsson in 21-22. A 50 game season more than enough of a sample size to use. Injuries are part of the game and factor into player value.

It is not safe to assume that. He wouldn’t be able to have the freedom on NYI and he wouldn’t get as much ice time. Also based on the fact he’s approaching his mid 30s it’s very likely he regresses in a big way next season.
If you’re projecting next season, it’s more likely that Dobson provides more value than karlsson.

This is wishful thinking on your part. Young high end RD tend to be the most valuable assets in the NHL. So not only do you think the isles should give up Dobson for a mid 30s player, but also miss out on 1 of 2 things . A. Sign Dobson to a long term deal in his prime or B. Trade him for multiple high end assets like Columbus did with Seth Jones.

Unrelated to this thread but iirc you have an evolving hockey subscription and I was wondering if you could look up the contract projections for Byram and Ross Colton

I do but the contract projections are only for pro subscribers. I saw an analytics page on Twitter predict 2.8 x 3 for Colton
