Very few ownership groups in the NHL don't care about real money. It is a business after all. I suspect Trotz has intention to either take on bad contracts for assets or sign a UFA with the cap space. Either way, I'm quite certain NSH ownership group isn't inclined to appreciate the dead money. I know it was a big deal to them when PHI screwed them with the Weber offer years ago.

They wouldn't have let Trotz make the move if they didn't want it to go through. Ownership oversees everything. It's either we're stuck paying a 3C 8m for two more years, or flip him, get a roster spot, and free 4m. It was a great move.

The state of the franchise is much different than what it was when PHI offer sheeted Weber too, though. I wouldn't be surprised if Trotz has something bigger up his sleeve. He wouldn't have just dumped Johansen and helped Colorado for the heck of it.

He has plenty of cap space to accommodate that contract right now. He’ll match and worry later about the other roster spots that have to be filled. He has all summer long. All you did was give him a #1 goalie at an extremely manageable cap number. If he wants he can now trade five-year cap-controlled Gus for much more than a second rounder. Billy matches, 100%.
