Description

With Murray bought out and Brodie traded for picks the Leafs will have 24 million in cap space to fill out the roster.

With Giordano as a scratch, Samsonov back on a short term deal, and Holmberg signed to a cheap deal to fill the 4th line C spot, that will leave 19.5 million to sign four forwards and three defencemen.

The most important holes to fill will be 2nd LW and a 3C. Leafs shouldn't cheap out and bargain shop for those two spots.

If Schenn comes back on a cheap deal to play with Rielly then the Leafs can afford to go without a true number 1 right hand defenceman for a couple more years because that pair was very good in the playoffs.

The leafs defense was pretty good last year. Keefe had them playing a good system. Kulikov and Mayfield replace Brodie and Holl. That's not that drastic a change to all of a sudden be awful. It's more physical. And while Brodie is good I'd rather have ROR or Barbashev than Brodie making 5 million.

It's a sacrifice worth making if it means more playing time for Liljegren. And I think the Leafs should spend more cap in the forward group, so Brodie's 5 million cap hit can be put to better use.

like i said, they have 19m to spend with 6 d already signed. hes their most reliable d. and if it is putting it to mayfield and schenn and kulikov, it is not better use.

That's 3 for 1. That's a good trade off. With the possibility of injury to Brodie, who looked injured in the playoffs, it's better to spread that wealth among more players.

brodie is better than all 3, lily can still get the ice time with brodie in there.
