Description
Trade 1: Lindholm for Newhook and 23 1st + on draft night.
Avs solve 2C prior to free agency and use their 2 best assets that aren't NHL D's. Looked at Toews for Lindholm, but CGY's depth at D didn't make sense without making the deal bigger. Avs would need confirmation that Lindholm was willing to extend in COL during the '23-'24 season.

Trade 2: Toews for Krebs ++
Krebs is the main target here to replace the loss of Newhook at 3C. Toews extension talks lead the Avs to a place where he doesn't fit long term, especially with the addition of Lindholm. Olofsson retained gives the Avs some additional offense in the short term and can be hidden defensively with Val and Lindholm. But could swap out Olofsson and next years 1st with other young forward prospects if needed.

Trade 3: Peeke for '24 1st (COL)
Avs use a late 1st to add a young defensemen with term. Peeke helps fill out the depth on the right side and could potentially slide up to 2nd pair next year if Manson is moved for additional cap space.

Trade 4: Francouz for Picks
Used the Georgiev trade as a framework. Avs get a collection of picks from a team looking to use Franky in a tandem pairing. Georgiev showed he can be a true number 1 and with Johansson not going back overseas, they can bring in a cheaper 2nd option to hold the spot until Annunen is ready.

RFA's:
Byram - Avs gamble that Byram is a legit Top pairing guy and sign him to a deal that could turn into a huge steal. Or a massive anchor on the cap.
Meyers - Gets the LOC deal as he should continue to develop into a solid 2way player. Ideally he finds a way to convert his underlying metrics into actual offensive production and overplays this contract. Worst case scenario, he provides a solid presence on the 4th line but lacks finishing touch. Which should be just fine on a contract just over 1 million.
Malgin - 1 year QO. Sticks with the team as a depth forward/scratch. When in the lineup, we need to see if he can continue to score at a similar pace to last season before giving more term/money in the future.
Annunen/Merkley - 1 year QO's to stay with the organization and continue to develop in the AHL.
Puljujarvi - Won't be QO'd by Carolina. 1 year deal to rebuild his game. Will get waived by April 1st for Kovalenko if there are not signs of life by then.
Ranta - Avs make the QO to keep his rights, but he doesn't sign as he is going back to Europe.

UFA's:
Cogs - 1 year deal at or around 1 mil. Glue guy in the lockerroom, MacK loves him. Not much more that needs to be said. Good guy to have around at his price point.
OEL - 2 year deal with the Avs to rebuild his value if possible. All depends on the medical on him. And he needs a couple solid puck movers ahead of him to keep him on the 3rd pair. Avs have the ability to shelter him as needed.
Donato - This could be any depth wing at around 1.5 mil or less. But Donato is a good option that can put up 30+ points on a 3rd line.

Reserve List:
Kovalenko - Eligible for 1 year ELC. Give him the max to come over at end of KHL season and join the Avs roster. Gets to double dip before getting a new contract next summer.
Behrens - Signs ELC at end of DU season to join the Eagles.

Future:
On an 87.5M cap next summer, Avs have 11.3M to extend Lindholm, Krebs, Kovalenko, and 3-4 other skaters to get to 20-21. Probably have to move Manson next summer to make it all work unless there is more bad news on the Landy front.

Not enough for Lindholm.

I haven't seen the growth/progression from Newhook to warrant trading our #1 center.

Would want a better prospect(Is Newhook even a prospect at this point?) and/or more picks.

We can probably keep Frankie (which we should want to do) by re-signing Jack Johnson instead of OEL. I'm not sure you're getting ~$1million better out of OEL in 3rd line minutes.

As perfect as he would be in COL, I don't think Calgary is going to be trading Lindholm, I think he'll extend there. Who are they going to get to replace him? They have too many somewhat older players signed for way too long on that roster to NOT keep going for it.

EDIT: i'm in on the BUF & CBJ trades, though. Peeke is capable of 2nd line minutes if paired with G.

I think if someone offers a Georgiev type package for Franky we would have to atleast consider it. The new trend around the league seems to be not letting guys walk for nothing. I don't see us extending Francouz next summer due to other needs under the cap. So getting a couple lotto tickets to use on high skill guys that drop this year or future year assets to use at the deadline for a goalie that Georgiev has made expendable is good asset management.

If I were CGY, I would want to keep Lindholm as well. Still no news on if he wants to extend though. And if he decides he isn't extending in CGY, they will move him before the draft. Not sure if this package is enough, but would start here and let CGY pick and choose from the prospect pool if needed.

JJ for 1 year is probably safer than OEL. But if OEL's foot is back to 100%, he has potential to play above that contract. If he is injured this year, we still have Hunt to come up and play reliable 3rd pair minutes.

Agreed, if an offer like that for Frankie is available you may have to consider it, although I think the Avs could probably wait until the season (IE: wait until there's an early season ending injury) and do even better. Just puts the Avs at its riskiest G situation since Grubauer was the starter. Maybe there's a decent backup on the trade block.

I remain pessimistic about OEL but the reasoning of course is sound

I don't see that Frankie trade as realistic. No way he brings in three picks. Way too much for Lindholm and Olofsson deals for two players who could easily walk after this season (noting that you indicated Lindholm would confirm interest in an extension).

Georgiev cost us 3 picks as a former #2 that we wanted to be a 1A/B. Would expect Francouz to cost similar from a team that wanted him to be a 1B. These picks are slightly worse than the 3/3/5 we traded as well.

Would expect to extend Lindholm and Krebs if trading for them, even if that meant moving on from Manson. Olofsson would be the 1 year top 6 placeholder for Landy. Would then look to upgrade that spot next summer with Landy or a better option if Landy isn't able to come back.

The Georgiev trade is a good comparison on the one hand, so it's a fair point. On the other hand, Georgiev was seen as the starter before Shesterkin unexpectedly emerged. COL clearly saw him as the starter workhorse right away, despite some talk about a 1A/1B pairing with Frankie. I don't think teams see Frankie in the same way (not even COL did), but he's a solid 1B for somebody. I honestly have no idea if that would bring three picks. I kind of wish we could move on from Manson now as it's looking like a bad contract, but I'm willing to see what happens this year.

I don't think anyone saw Georgiev emerging as a true number 1 workhorse. Francouz injuries pushed him into that role and he thrived. Now I could see the picks being worse than I included based on injury history, but if that's the case, I probably just hold onto him as injury insurance and go cheaper than OEL.
