Do you really see Matthews signing with Columbus? A waste of two first rounders and Minten for two expiring contracts.

No, doubt Matthews goes to Columbus but you never know. If he does though, it's likely through free agency, but I think Matthews is going to be in Toronto for the next couple of years at the least. If he's not going to be a Leaf, I think Chicago, Boston, Washington, LA, and Dallas (if they can free up the cap) would be places where he could sign.

That's more or less what it would cost to rent those players early on. Obviously, the intent is going to be to resign them to long-term deals.

Still doesn't change the fact that you aren't getting those picks without protection. In which scenario does Lindholm or Hanifin fetch an unprotected 1st with a year left on his deal?

Matthews trade isn’t close. He’s 25 and has scored more goals than ANYONE since coming into the league. He averages over 50 goals per 82.

What if that's the only location he's willing to go to? I was going to make both 1sts unprotected.

There's going to be a CBJ fan who won't want to give up 7-years of Kent Johnson (or whatever it is) for 4-years of Matthews.

You do understand teams are willing to pay 1sts and tons of high end prospects for those players individually. And we'd only trade them if they're unwilling to resign. With Lindholm and hanifin together we could get such a better offer than this

Okay, so if they are unwilling to re-sign and are being dealt with 1-year left (no extensions), what does each guy fetch in your opinion at the start of the season?

Lindholm: 1st, 2nd, good prospect, mid prospect or player
Hanifin: 1st, mid prospect or mid player

Lindholm will have a similar deal as to what Horvat got, Hanifin similar to Provorov

I know Robertson's value is down and he's not rated as high as Raty, but it's possible someone takes a chance on him. Minten is a B-prospect as far as I know. So basically, just eliminate the picks that I added on CGY's side (I figured Roslovic might be able to bring a bit more value), and maybe add a 2nd or 3rd. Although, no two deals are going to be exact, so I would just go with the trade as is on the Leafs' side and eliminate the picks from the Flames.

I thought of it as Lindholm for 1st+Minten+Roslovic and Hanifin for 1st+Robertson.

If the leafs wanted hanifin id wanna see: Hanifin + Stuff for Nylander or Hanifin for Liljegren, 1st and maybe a low-end prospect

Idk, "Matthews starts a small family and wants a safe place for his kid with good education" or "Treliving finds CBJ to be offering the best package by far."

If we are considering it as a 3-way trade where 4-years of Matthews+Robertson and Minten nets Kent Johnson+ two high-end rentals in Lindholm & Hanifin+Peeke it seems to me that the Leafs might need something small on top. If we are considering it as KJ+two 1sts (likely late)+Roslovic+Peeke for Matthews (for 4-years), CBJ probably should be adding a proven (probably someone of Jenner's caliber but not Jenner) or another top prospect/more proven prospect but I don't know who it could be without the price being too much. Maybe just add another unprotected 1st rounder?

Hanifin+ for Nylander is quite possible but that's a scenario where neither Matthews or Lindholm would get dealt.

Liljegren+a 1st + a prospect seems like a really high price to pay for Hanifin even with an extension in place (assuming that he's getting dealt either way). If CGY is Hanifin is willing to stay in CGY, then maybe it's a reasonable ask but I think Treliving would then try acquiring Zadorov or someone else.

“A safe place?” Toronto isn’t a safe place? Compared to Detroit, Chicago, LA, NY, etc. it’s very safe. “Starts a small family?” He’s single, even if he gets some girl pregnant this summer, that kid will be 7 when his max contract of 8 years is done. Do you think he is worried where his kid will attend junior kindergarten?

It was a joke based on some of the reasons cited by Gaudreau and Severson on why they chose Columbus.

Also, I'm comparing Toronto to Columbus, not other cities. New scenario: He wants a safe place for himself.

Anyways jokes aside, read the bottom half of the previous post and let me know what you think should be adjusted.

Matthews is a top 5 player in the league. The team that gets the best player wins the trade. Lindholm is a 60 point forward that had a career year when both his line-mates had over 100 points. It’s a huge downgrade and how big of an upgrade is Hanifin over Brodie or McCabe or Lily?

Have a look a cup champions…they almost always have an elite center. Eichel, MacKinnon, Point, Stamkos, Crosby, Kopitar. Trade Matthews and kiss your chances good bye.

Trading Matthews isn't going to be done under ideal circumstances. As for Lindholm, he's comparable to O'Reilly who was the Blues best C in 2019. Adding Hanifin without taking away from the blueline is only going to make them better, just look at the recent past winners, most had deep Dcores.

You cross that bridge when you come to it. Until then your only focus is resigning Matthews. The player with more goals than any NHL’er since he entered the league. Someone who averages over 50 goals per 82 games played. 22nd all-time in career PPG. 8th in takeaways dispite missing games, Good on draws. Led all forwards in blocked shots. I could go on.

If they are comfortable with potentially letting him or Marner walk for nothing, then sure. Signing Matthews for 3-years for example, then another monster 8-year deal is like going to be more about keeping Matthews from winning on a different team, than winning with him. With each year the League is getting more talented, so other teams are going to have a better chance at winning even if Matthews is still the top goal scorer. The Leafs cup window will likely be the duration of the potential short term deal.

In my opinion, it should be now or never that the Leafs signing Matthews to a monster deal, so the should get an 8-year deal done now even if it costs them Marner. If they aren't comfortable with that then try to move him this offseason.

Matthews has said he wants to stay and a deal will get done. He can’t sign until July 1. I wouldn’t stay up at night worrying about it until then.

Even at the trade deadline with a list of 3 teams, there is still a lot of value.

Maybe but at that point it might be better to just rent him themselves, depends on the offers. If the best offer is Kuznetsov+futures, I think the Leafs are better served trying to win the Cup and having 11.6M in cap space. Also, helps that whoever signs Matthews as a ufa will have to pay more.
